    Hey Guys,

Bought a brand new Inspiron 1720 from Dell, with a 8600M GT video card.
Fist laptop i have ever purchased

I uninstalled everything, wanted windows XP, BIG mistake... 50% of the drivers arnt even available for XP. So i installed Vista again, i want to dual boot Vista/Linux. I started downloading the drivers, only graphics drivers on the dell site for my laptop is this:

    GeForce 8400M GS
    GeForce 8400M

There are none for 8600M GT. I installed those above, and my display says i am still using VGA..

I have gotten this 2 days ago, been busy with work, cant even get the laptop to function properly. Never realized drivers and laptops where such a mess....

If someone could please help me out, i would really appreciate it

You can also download the drivers from laptopvideo2go.com

Download the 163.44 drivers for Vista and the modded .inf file. Replace the .inf file in the folder where you extract 163.44 drivers before running the setup. You should be ok with that.

Yea I had to rewoenload drivers the other day on my 1520. For future refrence I think its just a typo but I just downloaded the drivers labeled 8400m for my 8600gt and they were the right ones.

They are general nvidia drivers, not just for 8400gs, if you used those they'd work fine anyway

There is a thread in the Dell forums about installing Windows XP on the 1420/1520/1720. Search for it, I believe the guide was originally written for 1420's but it works with all of them because they all have basically the same hardware. I'm running XP on my 1520 right now with no issues. I plan to go back to Vista when SP1 is released, so don't give up, it requires a little work but it's worth it.

Btw all the hardware drivers for XP are on the dell site.
