Hey guys, I'm looking to piece together an older system thats only concern would be running a counter strike source server. I already have the server set up on my laptop, but would like to move it to something more stationary.

I was just looking to get an idea of what you guys would recommend for specs. I assume, based on it just running in the command prompt, that I would need a decent processor/RAM, with no concern on the graphics card. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I was thinking somewhere around a 2+GHz dual core and 2+GB RAM? Anyone think that is a little light? Thanks.

that should be more than enough - not a lot going on server-side.

I agree with Whizzo. My server is an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ and 2GB PC3200, it runs L4D and TF2 servers no problem. It has a 7600GT in it, but that's because it's the lowest end PCI-E card I happened to have laying around.
I used to run a CS:S server on a Pentium 4 1.5GHz, 1GB RD800, with no video card at all. 12 players ran smooth and even then the bottleneck was my internet connection.

A single core Athlon 64 or P4 2.0 and greater with a gig or more mem will do just fine for a server.

Thanks for all the input guys, I figured a single core would do it alright, I think I may have something lying around I can throw together. Do you guys know if Mani Admin Plugin runs on linux via the same folders and whatnot as Windows?

The biggest factor for running your server is the connection. I used to run multiple servers off ISP T3's with a couple servers that were single core 2.4ghz and at least 2gb memory if you plan on running a decent sized server. If you just want to host a 10 person game a T1 does nicely. As far as the scripts go it should be fairly the same setup for linux as windows but read the doc's first to make sure you set it up properly.

goodspeed TPF, man its been a long time since I've seen one of those TPF tags around. I used to be into that back in the day but then gamespy pissed me off when they fired all of us admins on arcade and I quit using their forums, and after awhile I quit hosting servers. My old handle was [Pfeffer]DOH TPF. Ah those where the days.

    Good Luck BigHops323

    Cheers,

I'd probably buy a netbook with an Atom 1.6GHz and use it to host a server. :p

The most important part is to make sure you have a really good upload rate.
RAM, you will want at least 2GB, 2GHz or more would fit the bill.
Any dedicated card'll run those games fine, thats if you want to play on them.
Nice fast HDD, 7k2 or SSD.

It is incredible how bad this idea is.
The atom at 1.6ghz will be around the performance of a 1GHz Pentium M, and the 2GB limit on memory would be another serious problem.
Any 300 dollar PC would trump a netbook as a server.
