    Hi,
I am planning to buy a laptop and after searching I have there options

Windows 7, Q2630 processor and ATI 6770 in all. The difference is as below

    1. 4GB memory and 1GB 6770 card
    2. 4GB memory and 2GB 6770 Card
    3. 8GB memory and 2GB 6770 card

Normally I use my laptop for gaming (COD, BF, MOH, Crysis) and database handling and multi tasking, but I am not sure how much memory will be enough. I don't want extra memory just for the sake of it. I wanted to buy 6GB but thats not availale
Also note that it is not HD

A trick nowadays with the different ram for the GPU is that some cards with low ram (in this case 1GB) could be a gimped card. At least this is true for the Nvidia 555m. Maybe some other user here has the data, but you should check is there is only 1 version of the 6770 or not.

    Hope it helps.

The HD6770m can have 1GB or 2GB, but both are GDDR5 on a 128bit bus. I'd say get the minimum cofiguration, but you're going to need to list exactly what programs, so to be safe, IMO, get 8GB RAM and the 1GB HD6770m (because the HD6770m is not fast enough to leverage more than 1GB of VRAM, in most cases), if possible. Database + multitasking, depending on what kind of DB operations you are running, may require lots of system RAM.

I'm assuming this is an HP dv6/7. The 2GB 6770 is a waste of money, since, like jeremyshaw said, the 6770 is just not fast enough to make good use of it.

The RAM question depends on what they're pricing the upgrade at. Generally it's more cost-effective to get the base amount and upgrade RAM yourself, because OEM pricing on DIMMs is usually at a premium markup. The only exception would be if you were looking to get something like a 2x8GB setup, since buying through an OEM is basically the only way to get 8GB DIMMs.

If the 6770 is the same model regardless of RAM, then like said 1 GB will be plentiful. In regards to the laptop ram (4 vs 8 GB), I'd say go for the cheapest. if there is not an option of 8 GB with the 1 Gb 6770, then check outside (newegg?) on how much 8 GB costs, I think it wouldn't hurt for a seamless experience.

Thanks for everyones suggestion. I wanted 6770 card 1GB and 6GB RAM. but the problem is that these are the only possible configurations

    4GB RAM 1GB 6770
    8GB RAM 2GB 6770

Very silly to bring a configuration like this. So i believe everyone votes for 4GB RAM?? It is HP-DV61XX series (yes same one with open GL issue).

If I were buying this machine, I would get the 4gb version and buy 8gb from somewhere else and install it myself. Having already done it on my unit, I can tell you that it is incredibly easy.

    1. You should give us price range so we could say what we would do in this case.
    2. Agree that GPU may not use all memory but it is always better to have more than less. Of course if price is reasonable.
    3. Buy ask them if they can put 1x4GB stick of RAM. If they can they you can aftermarket upgrade to another one stick.

Not if more is a waste of money, which in this case, it is. I don't know how much the difference is in the OP's country, but here you pay $75 extra for that 1 additional GB.

    1. 4GB memory and 1GB 6770 card

4gb of memory is enough and the difference between a 1gb and 2gb 6770 is basically 0
