I am, unfortunately, currently stuck at a university with a terrible internet connection. As a result, I find myself practically unable to play games such as CounterStrike and other online, multiplayer games, for the time being. So, in order to not die from video game withdrawal, I need to turn to some good single player games.

My favourite types of games are FPS and RTS games. I usually shy away from RPG-style games, as I was not a fan of Neverwinter Nights or The Elder Scrolls series. If anyone can recommend some good games to tide me over for 4 months or so, that would be absolutely fantastic.

Games I already play offline are Sins of a Solar Empire (has anyone beta tested the expansion?), Starcraft, Half Life 2 and it's episodes, and UT III and 2004. EDIT: I forgot to mention Crysis and Bioshock.

    Any recommendations are highly appreciated!

    - Bioshock
    - Mass Effect
    - Crysis, Crysis Warhead

    * 'Hitman' trilogy online or on steam, the Hitman series is a bit old, but really good, if you have not already played it.

Fallout 3 for sure, that will give you hundreds of hours of playtime. It's just a great game.

Crysis is another good one, it's not that long (you can beat it in less than half a day), but it has good replay value.

The original FEAR and the upcoming FEAR 2 are worth looking at as well. Play the original first.

Haha, thanks for that suggestion, but I've some of those issues covered on another front.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I've been thinking of getting Fallout 3, but have been slightly deterred due to the fact that it's an RPG.

And Chaz, you're right, Crysis was an easy finish.

Eh, Left 4 Dead is decent too (Yeah even single player).
Grand Theft Auto 4 is just an all around fun game to me (Sure its a crappy port, but trust me its not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, its so much better than on the consoles, to me atleast)
Should try this RPG though, Assassins Creed. Pretty fun "time wasting" game.

Also get Warhammer 40k Soulstorm if you are RTS fan. The campaign should take some time to finish especially because in this expansion when you are defending your bases are gone. Also the stronghold battles are really nice. Atm it’s like 4€ on steam so it’s really cheap and you get access to DoW II beta multiplayer in which you can also play skirmish against a computer, so you don’t need a good internet connection.

Since when is playing beer pong and meeting wemon = STD's? When I was in HS I played beer pong every weekend and there was hardly anything sexual ever going on. Men and women can drink together and nothing sexual happen, believe it or not :O

    Anyways, I would recommend Fallout 3 and L4D :D

I wouldn't recommend the Halo series if you're playing it on the PC, Halo 1 maybe but def. not Halo 2. COD4 is a fun game. I HIGHLY recommend the Half Life series! The Half Life series is one of the best FPS' I've played in a long time :)

Best SP experiences, anything Half Life, Max Payne Series, Halo Series, Gears of War, and lastly Assassins Creed (gets annoying but definitely something that is a lot of fun for at least a few hours.) Games where I did not enjoy SP (just my opinion here...) Crysis, don't really know, controls felt slow to me, got shot at from what felt like hundreds of feet away, but it was a very good looking game! Far Cry 2 - didn't like anything about the SP, don't really know what is wrong with me, I really enjoyed the Map Editor though. Just my two cents...

Crysis Warhead is a very good and engaging game. You should be able to run it with DOOMED15 Ultra Config silky smooth at any res with the GT you have.

Also try out Dead Space which is a very good game.

Mass Effect is phenomenal as well.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm probably gonna check out S.T.A.L.K.E.R and F.E.A.R, and perhaps Fallout 3.

By the way, hijacking my own thread, does anyone own Garry's Mod? And if so, how is it?

    RTS

Dawn of War (or the couple of stand alone expansions)
Act of War (I think it's way better than World in Conflict)
Dragonshard (little bit older, but fun...based on D&D stuff)
    Company of Heroes

    FPS

Dead Space (actually, it's 3rd person like Gears of War...but action oriented)
Star Wars Republic Commando (better than the Jedi Knight FPSs...very linear)
    Doom 3/Quake 4 (I prefer Quake 4)
Chronicles of Riddick (get ready for the sequel)

i recommend the Chronicles of riddick: escape from butcher bay or maybe you could wait for the sequel which will include a remake of the original plus a true sequel(supposed to be as long as the first game!!)...i also recommend trying the orange box, the GTA series, Mafia, Halo 1, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Dead space and Mass effect...

I own garry's mod and its pretty cool if you're someone with imagination (cause you can do, create, build, blow, ignite, etc, etc, etc thousands of things), its like a source engine sandbox, but there isn't any exact way to describe the game.
