Hey guys, I'm wondering if you can recommend a good first person shooter for me.
For starters, I'll list what I already own, in the interests of preventing recommendations for them:
So, that's a pretty nice sized list. What can I say, I get bored easily.
- All Valve games
- All Unreal games
- All Call of Duty games
- Halo and Halo 2 for PC
- All Medal of Honor games
- Battlefield 2, 2142, and pre-ordered Bad Company 2
- All Star Wars Jedi Knight series games (yep, including the original Dark Forces), and Battlefront games
- Doom 3
- All S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games
- Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter

The main issue here is that I intend to play on my 1201N, so I want something that doesn't demand much from my hardware, particularly my CPU. Source engine games (even early ones like CS:S) have trouble running smoothly on this thing, while others like MW2 and CoD4 run just fine at native resolution, since they rely more on the GPU than CPU.

Not much more anyone can add to that list, try FEAR series, BioShock series, and here's a list of FPS sorted by rating:

Bioshock for sure, if you can run it.
-
I do not see Painkiller on that list.
That is a flaw, and must be rectified.
Is cheeeep on GoG.com. You have no excuse.
Also, awesome that you played Dark Forces. That's what first got me into PC gaming
.

Cool list, some of those look pretty neat, and I've never heard of them. I do think it's a bit silly that Crysis is number 1, though.
Yeah, I downloaded the demo, and it runs okay, but not fantastic. Still, I'm sure it would be playable with some more setting tweaks. I may scoop it up on Steam now.
I'll look into Painkiller, never heard of it, but the fact that it's on GoG makes me think it's something that I should have.
Yeah, Dark Forces was my first as well, on my old Packard Bell, armed with a 90MHz Pentium.
-
Like they said above me:
FEAR
Bioshock 1 and 2
Maybe Crysis? Was a pretty good game, gotta have good specs to even think about running it though.
Not many more I can think of... -
I'll check out F.E.A.R., see how the demo runs on this, and Bioshock as well. This is a mighty little netbook, but I think Crysis is pretty much right out.
-
Haha. Don't worry, your not missing out on anything in Crysis.
-
I actually own it, as well as Crysis Warhead, and have played through both, but that's on my desktop system, armed with an 8800GT. I thought it was pretty fun, and the open world design was pretty cool.
I recall completing one mission by just activating Speed mode and sprinting through the entire level, as it was relatively straightforward.
I took a few hits and had to stop for cover on a few occasions, but I didn't really get into any skirmishes. Took me about 5 minutes to get to the end checkpoint...I imagine it would have taken half an hour or more if I had fought through the whole thing.
I also think the on-the-fly weapon tweaking aspect was pretty neat; being able to swap out scopes and red dot sights, lasers and flashlights, etc, as well as regular vs. tranquilizer ammo and what not. I think more games should incorporate this kind of modification system. -
deus ex, my all time favourite game.
farcry 1, still awesome, but checkpoint saving is pita.
max payne series, not fps though.
avp 1/2. -
AvP!!! Even though some people on this forum will disagree with me, i still recommend it.
-
It's not an FPS, but a shooter anyhow.
Mass Effect 1 and 2. Both are great games. -
Thanks guys, I'll check out AvP and Deus Ex. And yeah, I remember the original FarCry, I forgot about that one. I wonder if it would run well on this?
I've heard good things, but Mass Effect is based on the Unreal Engine 3, which is terribly inefficient; even my last laptop with a Core 2 Duo and ATi 4570 had trouble running it. -
mass effect 2 runs better and looks better too.
-
ME2 is much better technically. It runs smooth, and looks good too.
Loading times can be long, but that's to be expected with a game like Mass Effect. -

No One Lives Forever
If you could perhaps get over the outdated graphics (released in 2000, if my memory serves correct) it'll provide some of the best gameplay an FPS will offer.
It's James Bond meets Soap meets Austin Powers meets Kill Bill. Great game. -
Have you tried Natural Selection? I think AvP got their idea from it. QuakeWars Enemy Territories was alright. The mini objectives throughout the game kept things interesting during the demo. Serious Sam II is pretty fun (especially with 4 people)
I concur with everyone on bioshock 1 & 2. Also System Shock 2 (older game though).
I noticed you have no Quake games on your list. If you like Unreal you may like Quake III Arena. It is really easy on the CPU and even runs inside firefox! (quakelive.com). It has great multiplayer action. Quake IV's style is similar to Doom3.
Lastly Modern Warfare 2. (technically ont a COD game...but technically is I guess) -

Try some Resident Evil games!

if you have BF2 you can try the mod Project Reality. they just released a new version (0.9). its a very good game that i have been playing over the last few days.

That looks pretty awesome, thanks!
I've got MW2, I'll look into those others.
I've played RE4 before, I wasn't too impressed honestly.
BF2 runs like crap on this thing.
-
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
Maybe mentioned already but worthy of another post!
AVP (original)
Riddick
Deus Ex
Max Payne 1 & 2
Area 51 (Free on gamershell)
If you can find them than yes NOLF 1 & 2 are absolute gems! -
Borderlands!!
-
Riddick was a great game and ran well on the Go7700
-
Ran like crap even on my old Studio 15 with a Core 2 Duo and dedicated ATi 4570, it would only do worse on this thing.
Another one I'll look into, thanks.

OFT : Theirs a error in the unreal engine that doesn't play nice with duel core processors, basically it makes the loading times 10x longer. You have to alt-tab out once its launched, run task manager, go to the process for mass effect 2, change the affinitiy on the processor to one click ok, then change it back to 2, this should cut the loading times to nothing.
Pretty much what everyone else has recommending,
Deus Ex : All time fav FPS
Bioshock
Fear -
That's interesting...Borderlands ran quite smoothly on my 8600m gt (m1530). All my settings were pretty maxed too (@ 1280x720), just didn't use shadows as that killed my frames. Anyway, it's a pretty good game though
.
Bioshock is cool
. The first time I played it, I actually didn't like it too much. But then I played it a couple months later and thought they game was quite good. What changed in those months? I have no clue
. It's a good game as well, like everyone has said.
You could also wait for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in March. I'm looking forward to that one, I hope it's optimized well for PC though

Dude get Condemned : Criminal Origins
It's a gem !.
Deadspace is good too even with the crappy control.
Recommend an FPS for me
