Hi!
I've not new to gaming, but I've only played FPS action games till now, like DOOM, F.E.A.R, Far Cry etc. I'd like to try a new genre, and I want to know about some good RTS games. I have no idea what-so-ever about what's the latest on these games, so I'd appreciate some assistance! The specificaton of my notebook, the machine on which I'll play the game(s), are in my signature! The game should be tactically sound, if you know what I mean.
Thank you!![]()

go for rpg's
-
Well let me see... Company of Heroes is my favorite RTS at the moment.
-
Yeah as was mentioned before, Company of Heroes is great (very tough). You should also try the following:
1) Age of Empires III
2) Warcraft III
3) Rome: Total War -
Dawn of War: Dark Crusade or Dawn of War: Soulstorm, based on the Warhammer 40k universe, really good games, but quite dated graphically
-
World in Conflict...
but should def. check out Adventure Games( Dreamfall, Fahrenheit) or RPGs(Oblivion, The Witcher) too -
Rome Total War!! I hate RTS but I love this game, it looks awsome:
-
Company of heroes definatly the way to go.
-
The RTS's that I currently enjoy include:
Company of Heroes
Command & Conquer 3
Sins of a Solar Empire
While World in Conflict is an excellent RTS it can be fairly demanding on system performance. Especially with the nuclear strikes.
And then there's Starcraft 2 when it's released! -
World in Conflict !
-
I highly recommend Warcraft 3 and have a look at the upcoming Starcraft 2
-
Age of empires 2
-
Everyone should own oblivion, World in Conflict is a blast, since you have a great CPU it should run well.

World In Conflict, Command and Conquer 3 + expansion, and watch out for Starcraft 2. Also Dawn of War 2.
-
Total War might be a little much for a first timer, as it is somewhat slower paced, and also involves the turn based element too. Sins is a damn fine game, but again, possibly a bit much for a first RTS. I'd also recommend Company of Heros for smaller scale battles; it is much more about tactics than strategy. You should defenitely check out Supreme Commander for some grand strategy RTS action as well.
-
Battle for Middle Earth 2, if you like Lord of the Rings.
-
Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
-
how come nobody recommends Medieval II?
-
You can't go wrong with Starcraft.
It's been around for ten years and it's still a very fun game to play.
Try the demo from here:
http://www.blizzard.com/us/StarCraft/scdemo.html
Then patch the demo with this (to get additional maps):
http://www11.brinkster.com/up2/UltimatePatch.asp -
also the HoI series...........
i play old rts games though and not too many like those. (settlers 4) (AoE2) (Empire Earth) the occasional Warcraft 3.
and company of heroes gets a recomendation from me as well + the expansion. -
CoH is the flavour of the season right now, but I prefer the Total War series for its scale. Supreme Commander as already mentioned is great for seeing thousands of robots go at each other.
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
COH series for sure and Sins of a Solar empire for more of a relaxed pace game.

Company of Heroes and World In Conflict get my vote.
-
Yeah, Empire Earth is a very fun game if you don't mind something a touch older.
-
I can't believe nobody has said Starcraft yet.. only the greatest RTS ever. Ever.
-
-
I know I'm going to be called a heratic, but I did't care for Starcraft. I liked Total Annihilation much better. Maybe I'd like it more now, but back when it was new, I remember liking other RTS games alot more.
-
COMPANY OF HEROES!!!
the best RTS game i have played so far. Try supreme commander, you'll literally be a supreme commander
coz the battles are huge! you'll be commanding atleast 200 units all at the same time. CnC 3 + expnsion if you want a fun and fast paced RTS.
-
Thanks guys!
So Company Of Heroes got the most votes? I'll be getting paid today, so I'll try to get it today!
And if turns out to be retarded, I'm coming out for whoever recommended me this!
Thanks again!
P.S - My system would handle it with full shebang on, right? -
-
World in Conflict for multiplayer and Company of Heroes.
-
Supreme Commander! Warcraft III!
-
So it's World In Conflict vs Company of Heroes. Will WIC run well on my notebook? What about COH? I've added a poll. Please vote. I'd go out and buy one of these tonight.
Thank you! -
World In Conflict
I've explained why soooo many times... I just don't have the energy to do so again....
-
I loved World in Conflict. Great game.
-
hmm... I personally never liked the multiplayer in World in Conflict coz (from my experience) it's only fun if you have a few friends or a team playing together so that all of you can work together. It's basically a hugely team-based game and if you don't have people you know that would play with you then there's not much point in playing it. If you're just playing with random people on your team and your team don't cooperate then basically you've lost before the match even starts lol. But then again I only tried the multiplayer beta for it so maybe the full game is better.
On the other hand I think both the single and multiplayer for CoH are really good and fun but maybe a bit hard for beginners. And yea both games should run pretty well at med settings on your 8600M GT. -
CoH does what it does extremely well, but I would really recommend getting SupCom so you see both ends of the spectrum. Also, if you try Warhammer 40k, it is pretty obvious that it works off the same basic game engine as CoH. If you like CoH, definitely pick up the WH40K series.

Out of the choices, world in conflict.
1.) Newer
2.) Better graphics, and if you have a really good graphics card, it looks great!
3.) Awesome story behind it. It's nice to have a twist from the past. -

Well, I have both. And, I like both. They're both unique.
And trying the game, you should get a demo instead. I'm just adding supporting details to why I think he should get World in Conflict.
I mean, look at other users of what they think. All they said was that they liked it because of gameplay. I'm just saying what they said, and adding just a bit more to it.
In World in Conflict, you can get nukes, and blow your enemy up. -
lol.
You can get nukes in SupCom too.
Honestly, rather than starting a fight, I think we should just tell him to try out 5 or 10 games. -
Sneaky_Chopsticks Notebook Deity
Or, like I said earlier. He can download demos, and then can make decisions for himself.
-
Yup. Try out demos for 5 or 10 games.
-
Thank you so much everyone for your replies.
I'd be buying Company Of Heroes tonight. I'm assuming it has no patches included in it, so I will be downloading the patches now. There are 20,000 patches of the game right now, from v.X to vX.1, from vX.1 to vX.2, and so on. Is there a cumulative patch?
Thanks!
Recommend me a RTS game!
