My M1730 XPS is about to arrive and I plan on grabbing some games for it.
It only has one 8700M GT, will there be any games that I can't play at all or at stupid low settings like 800x600?
Second question: what games should I get? I'm looking for some action games, maybe FPS, and maybe WiC...
Here were some that I've been thinking of...
Crysis
WiC
COD4
Any other good ones?
Semi-recent games that I already have...
Really just Sins of a Solar Empire that is that recent at all....
-
-
You pretty much summed it up yourself!
-
Counter Strike: Source is a lot of fun too. An old game but still fun.
Tim -
crysis will run like crap on a 8700m
-
Orange Box and Gears of War are brilliant. Also you might take a look at Bioshock and Stalker if you don't have those already

i was going to make a thread like this about 8700 SLI, will they be able to play Cyrsis at decent settings and FPS? what would Sins Of A Solar Empire be like?
-
Sins runs fine on my current Acer which is terrible, over two years old with a single core CPU.
What settings do you think I could get with a single 8700M GT on Crysis? -
On my SLI 8800GTX crysis runs quite smooth on al max settings. The maximum you will be able to squeeze out of 8700 SLI is a playable fps on medium settings.
-
-
What resolution are you guys talking about though?
-
For 8700 SLI I was talking about 1680x1050. But single 8700 won't be able to run crysis at higher, than 1440x900
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
for you to get medium settings with some important settings on high, you will have to hit 1280x800. thats my guess. you could do 1440x900 on low/medium settings.
-
Great that sounds good.
-
Southpaw, your system is designed to house 2 8800M GTX, so 1 8700M GT can be OCed beyond redemption.
You can take it to 700/1800/1800 easily... -
As far as games go, you should also think about getting Unreal Tournament 3, the new Alone in the Dark (June Release), and Assassin's Creed (this one requires more than Crysis though). -
Should try the Orange Box, it has 7 games in it, also since the games run on the source engine your laptop will be able to play at high settings and a high resolution, on steam now its $39.99 also try Trackmania Nations Forever its free!
-
Assasin's Creed is very good. Even tho, I have to disagree about its system requirements. It runs smooth on max settings 1920x1200 on my notebook, crysis doesn't
Probably the problem is crysis's poor support for SLI...
-
Actually, Assassin's Creed works maxed out at WUXGA on my laptop with T9300 and single 8800M GTX as well.... and obviously Crysis does not!
-
Awesome guys thanks! Looks like I have a lot of gaming in front of me!
-
Assassin's Creed, 1920x1200, all max, 2xAA (if I remember correctly), 40+fps, looks even better than xbox 360
Crysis, 1280x1024, all max, 2xAA, 35fps
did you just say assassin's creed has higher hardware requirement? -
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing

An RTS list requires Supreme Commander.
-
@NULL
Thx -
Any game that makes every other game seem out of date the moment it comes out needs to be on such a list.

I would add Stalker Clear Sky to the upcoming wish list
Yeah, SLI 8800 will run all those games on max settings, except for Far Cry 2. Cause as far as I know, its system requirements are gonna be higher, than Crysis's. -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
im worried coz from i what i have read, they are crap, is that true? -
It's not as fast as 8800. It will let you run all latest titles (except for Crysis) on medium/high settings no problem. It's just that it is positioned as a gaming graphics card, but it's not really. I mean the previous generation 7950 is faster than it. You won't be able to see any DX10 benefits on 8700. Even 8800 sruggles with it.
Personally I think, that it is a waste of paying so much money for 8700 SLI and getting so little performance out of it, unless you got a very tight budget or not a hardcore gamer. -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
well im looking at a XPS m1730 but they come to £1,700+ with 8800's, so i decided that maybe i could get dual 8700's in a m1730 for under a £1000 then upgrade down the line, whatcha think, as it would cost roughly the same as it would if i went right to 8800m's this way i could save up and get 8800m's say 6-12months
-
Maybe worth it to go with a single 8800m and upgrade to SLI later.
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
you cant get the m1730 with a single 8800m, if you coudl then i would try and go for it.
-
Can you get a Sager NP9262 then?
-
I know the option is not on the online configurator. But I heard you can call up Dell and place the order than way with a single 8800M GTX. But if you don't want SLi in the first place, why not go with the Sager NP5793 ?
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
well i want to upgrade to SLI in the future, any idea how the basic setup of the 8700 SLI model would cost with a single 8800m?
-
I don't think Dell sells M1730 with single 8800.
Yeah, upgrading later on down the line sounds good. Dell will introduce an upgrade programm at some point as promissed. -
But from what I've seen around this forum, Dell's upgrades are hideously overpriced.
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
yeah thats what i heard, about only being able to use dual 8800's , so you think it would be a good idea to go for the Dell instead of say the Sager, if i want to upgrade to dual 8800m's i the future?
will it be able to Quad Core M
is it even called that? i add the M for Mobile^^, im not sure what its actual name is^^ -

{
*sigh*;
*facepalm*;
}
At this rate, you're never getting a laptop.... you've already been answered that question and similar questions by me and others NUMEROUS times EACH! -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
-
Dude... I completely remember answering that question... and *sigh* ... here we go again.... no! The current Intel motherboards won't support the newer to-be-released quad core processors, due to a different socket and chipset (Montevina). Then again gaming is GPU intensive not CPU intensive (much).... so it shouldn't matter.... a dual core with 8800 is FAR more future proof gaming-wise than say a quad core or octa core with 8600....
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
-
Man, get it straight already... they're all using the same Intel chipsets with the same processors (but different GPU MXM standards, as in the case of Dell, upgradeability-wise), so it's going to be the same story everywhere.... Weren't you gonna go with the Novatech X80r Pro ?
Wait... I don't even wanna know!.. -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
^^
yeah i was but decided that i wanted something with dual 8800m's instead
right now i understand ^^ -
Yeah, I agree with Prasad about the quad core mobile CPUs.
Dell's upgrade programm shouldn't be too expensive. What you've heard is probably the prices people get from Dell parts on 8800 SLI atm....and yeah, it is about 1800 baks, so no point of getting itBut when the actual programm will be introduced, I expect them to be about 600 baks.
To upgrade sager's 8700 to 8800 you need to change the whole motherboard, so this is not an optionEven tho they introduced new lappy with 8800 with a future support of 9800, which is prietty cool, but the laptop is not out yet.
-
Ok, I just want to clear the thing up with Assassin's Creed. From what I read on system requirements, AC asked for higher specs as compared to Crysis. I have Crysis, but haven't played AC, so I cannot say for sure.
As cards go, 8700M GT is a good card. It actually performs better than I thought it would. If one has the option to get an 8800M, go for that. Don't get 8700M SLI unless it's not possible to swtich to 8800M. I got my laptop last September, so I did not have an option for an 8800 at that time.
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
well i think i will go with dual 8700's as they could be had for about £1,000 and then upgrade to dual 8800m's in like 6months the prices should be down quite a bit by then
its either i get it with dual 8700's or not at all, i dont understand why they dont offer it with a single 8800m though?
