So I got an HD 3850, and on notebookcheck, it says that ATI recommends speeds of 580/750. Mine came with stocks of 480/600. That's a huge difference right there. I'm just wondering if I'll be okay with clocking it to recommended settings. 580 is no problem, but the 750 memory speed is looking a bit steep.

Overclocking it to those clocks should be fine as long as its stable and your temps are reasonable.
Clocks of 580/750 would be preferable to 580/<750 since most people like to keep the same ratio of their clocks. That said, feel free to drop down any clocks if doing so makes the GPU much more stable -
The GPU in your machine may be downclocked due to an inferior cooling system. I would recommend carefully monitoring temps and overclock slowly.

I have no clue why they downclocked it. MY GPU stays relatively cool all the time. The highest temperature its ever gotten to (in a stability test) was 65 degrees. That's far from an inferior cooling system imo

Yes, it is wonderfully cool... when it is downclocked 20%. I'd be careful pushing it up too. Not least because you could void any warranty you have messing with clocks.

I'm currently at 600/625, and it's pretty stable and amazingly, the temperature didn't raise one bit =O. I think I'll get it to 600/650(or perhaps 700), and then stop. And yes crash I did it little by little

I have a different and funny opinion/method(sounds idiotic and untrue but it OK for me), overclock your GPU slightly then left it like that for a few days or weeks, then overclock again. Keep continue like that. Until it reach a maximum. My GPU can't overclock a lot and have artifacts when overclock the 1st time to about 10%. I lower my overclock to about 5%. Then, I let it stay like that for few weeks. I tried overclock again, I could do 10%. Then, I continue this method. Now you can check my signature for my overclock.
OOooooo. Yea... I do not overclock little by little like:
If the GPU clock is 500/1000/500
I won't do something like 505/1005/505(everyone know this is safe and won't cause artifacts unless the GPU is dying). Morever, it is wasting time. I would straight jump to 5-10% of overclock, 535/1070/535. Then, only test it.
Lastly, be careful on memory clock. It don't have temperature sensor, so you don't know what its temperature even if get really hot. In addition, it is very easy to burn compared to core clock and shader clock.
