News - Red Orchestra 2 - FREE TODAY!

Red Orchestra 2 will be free on Steam until tomorrow 10 AM PST. It is a realism (hardcore but not a sim like ARMA) WWII FPS set in the Eastern Front. It features large-scale 64-player combat with both infantry and vehicles, many game types, and full mod support in the Steam Workshop. It is a very different experience from your average AAA FPS such as CoD or Battlefield, much grittier and more unforgiving.

It was PC Gamer's Multiplayer Game of the Year 2011. I've been enjoying it for a few years now. The critically-acclaimed standalone expansion set in the Pacific Theater called Rising Storm just came out last year and it again won GOTY 2013. It is also my personal favorite game from all of last year.

The cool thing is that these devs don't nickle-and-dime you for new content through paid DLC like *ahem* EA. They just released the GOTY update which added 14 new maps, 2 new transports, and 1 new faction, all for free. In fact, all DLC in this game is free and the devs have been and will continue supporting this game for years. And of course there is new content to discover every day in the Steam Workshop.

Even more awesome is the fact that even if you own only RO2 and not RS, you can still play on all RS maps and servers just like everyone else so you don't miss out. You will just be restricted to rifleman class and stats progression won't be saved until you upgrade.

And it gets even better! RS is having a free weekend coming up tomorrow and will be heavily discounted as well. So if you enjoyed your time with RO2, definitely get RS as well as it is an even better and more unique experience.

So yeah, come check it out. You've got nothing to lose, except perhaps your virtual lives, as you greenhorns will die a lot and in many painful ways. I want some fresh meat to shoot and blow up. :D

I should probably reinstall this one. I heard devs updated (or will update) RS.

Oh yeah, the GOTY update was this past Monday. There was a huge patch. Lots of great new content. They added new maps, troop transports, and a new faction along with a metric butt ton of improvements and bug fixes. I've only just starting getting into RS. Damn good game, it reminds me of the old bf1942 and for some reason prefer it to bf4.

I've added Red Orchestra 2 to my account just in case I decided to get around to it. Your enthusiastic portrayal of the game has convinced me to install it sooner.

Yep RS is awesome. Definitely one of my favorite WWII FPS of all time and I've played all the good ones. I absolutelly love playing the Japanese side in this game. We're always the underdogs but somehow we almost always manage to win with the odds stacked against us. There's just so much epicness in massed Banzai charges and running like a headless chicken through hoards of enemies disemboweling them with bayonets and katanas, especially those annoying OP flamers. The Type 38 bolt-action rifle is a beast for good marksmen. And dat knee mortar...

LOL RS doesn't remind me of BF1942 at all. BF1942 was like an over-the-topic comic book extravaganza with the worst gunplay I've ever seen. It was mostly a vehicle game. RS is exclusively infantry combat but it's got some of the most gritty and satisfying shooting mechanics of any game as well as tons of gun p0rn. RO2/RS actually reminds me most of CoD 1 & 2 (which were stellar unlike modern-day CoD which is trash) with some realism mods.

My fondest memories aren't of actually playing original BF1942 but of playing its great mods like Desert Combat, Forgotten Hope, and Eve of Destruction. All I remember from vanilla BF1942 was dicking around on the jeep/plane racing servers, getting cussed out/griefed by teammates after commandeering the battleship and running it aground, and doing a mass airdrop on a point with the entire team transported on the wings of a couple B-17 bombers.

I find a lot of games are preferrable to BF4 haha.

Yeah I love this game, especially Rising Storm.

Yeah the gun play is great. As you said it really isn't anything like 1942 but there's something about the openness and proaning in the shrubs with me old ye faithful rifle that takes me back.
