You know how key generators work? Typically they steal cd-keys (or obtain them somehow) and then puts them into a list that randomly selects (not generates as they are called) when you click the generate button.

Your cd-key will work on anyones computer, which is why you never want to tell anyone your cd-key unless you are done with it. Some games like Warcraft III let you INSTALL the game with the same CD-key but your unique cd key will only let you into the online program if your cd-key hasn't been used before online; duplicate cd-keys online are not allowed, but are allowed to play the campaign mode.

In programs like Steam, they verify your cd-key with an online service to make sure it hasn't been used before, which is why you should (or really only can) have 1 steam account.

Basically the only thing you should worry about with your cd-keys and your games is DON'T LOSE IT! Always keep a backup record of all your cd-keys somewhere, you never know when you may lose it and have to repurchase the game (which is much easier then having to send your jewel case etc. for a pretty high fee).
