    Hi,

    I need to replace a broken GTX 980m in a MSI GT72S 6QF-82 model.
I found some on the net but they all have different shape with the currently model I have
My question is : can I use the one on the market
    Any advice ?
    Thx

What do you mean with different shape?
the MSI card has same layout as other cards.

    ????????????????????
    What is that?
The GT 72 uses standard sized MXM cards, I've never seen anything like that in a GT 72.

You can buy a normal sized GTX 980M but you would also need another heatsink, since yours is currently made for whatever the hell that card is supposed to be.

Only GTX 980 had the additional power connector I thought?

Thats the 980 desktop chip, its a bit rare, but it doesn't need the extra power connector to be plugged into anything, sits between the 1060 and the 1070 performance wise.

Also, are you sure the GPU is bad?

    What happened/happens?

me neither understand why this is a different card, see pictures of the inside of this GT72S :

I think the heatsink is on the same place except one screw but I am not sure, I just compare pictures of the cards

he all the times freeze or go to black screen with stripes first and the black or even doesn't start after the first MSI logo at boot, when he has to switch he hangs or sometimes he start full and hangs or go to black screen, sometimes you can work with GPU for a minute or 2......
I disabled the GPU and he works fine with the Intel graphics ......

I googled it, and no, it's the GTX 980M. I'm completely confused as to why that thing has an extra power connector.

I think the heatsink is different, but you can either get a 980m and the heatsink, or mod your current one, or get a 1070. There was one GPU like yours on ebay for around 300€ not so long ago, that would be simpler, just swap one for the other.

Also, did you ever re-apply the thermal paste of your laptop/clean the heatsink?

Only the P870DM's 980N is 200W. The MSI single GPU 980N is 150W and the external power connector is not used:
