I've been contemplating picking up Resident Evil 4 for the PC after seeing some user-created mods that make the game look a heck of a lot better than it ever could on the PS2 or GC/Wii. These patches require version 1.1 of the game. Now I know that Ubisoft released this patch for the European and German versions of the game. I read that those fixes were included in the North American release, and thus, why no such patch is available for those versions. Can anyone with a North American version of RE4 confirm this? Or would I have to go through the (rather expensive) route of having to buy an import copy of the game to be able to install the patch and accompanying mods?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Its fantastic, PLENTY of great mods, and due to the clarity, it at times looks like the best version
Also the controls as awkward as they sound are actually perfectly fine and mimics playing with a controller. RE4 isnt about running and gunning, its about feeling vulnerable and the controls do that perfectly. Also, the original release didnt have and shaders and looked like ass, this has been fixed with the patch
The NA game i think comes with it so you should be fine, if it doesnt then just try the patch. All in all a great game, and a port that gets a lot more stick than it really should -

yes i was deciding between this or the wii version. this probally has better graphics but gameplay might be better on wii. although the aiming would with a mouse. are the other RE games on pc?

Quick FYI: The PC version doesn't support the mouse out of Box, it has to be done using a mod. -
I have RE4 for the PC and yeah, it's patched to 1.1 from the get-go if you have the NA version.
There's a really big modding community out there for this game...and as mentioned before, the mouse can only be used through a mod, but the mod is good enough to make it feel accurate. Also, there are various character and weapons skins, high res textures, shaders, high-res videos, etc. for further customization. This site is probably the most comprehensive in terms of RE4 mods:

yeah, the lack of mouse and keyboard control p!sses me off (also no graphics settings), seriously, I had to use a mod that emulates a game controller, and it was a horrible experience, it's like slapping PC gamers right in the face!
as far as mods go, not all that impressive, merely higher texture mods, graphics mods, etc etc...

and yes, all the other resident evil games have ported to the PC. -
If you do a google search for the mouse mod, you're bound to fine one that works very well for RE4. Also, all of the high-res textures/shaders/videos available greatly increases the graphic quality of the PC version to surpass even that of its console counterparts. If you visit the site i linked above you'll find even more mods... -

think ill just go for the wii version lol

I beat it on the PC with the 1.1 patch... it makes a difference... especially the brightness and contrast.
Here are some pics that I snapped a while back on my notebook:
Zombie Headshot.
Graphics were nice, although you could not increase quality... but 1920x1200 is sweet.
I used a PS2 controller (w/ USB adapter) to play it. There was a Mouse mod, but it was buggy, so I stuck with the controller.
As for mods, there were mainly skin and texture mods like Punisher, Solid Snake, etc... -
Haven`t tried many new mods lately after going back to mods in TES IV: Oblivion. Pic below for what some stuff there is, mostly texture, skin, model replacers, there even got Jill Valentine model from RE1 into the game (To name a few)
Just tried out the DX9 enbseries.ini mod which really makes the game colours more moody.(kinda a bloom filter) pretty snazzy i think you need geforce 8XXX thou. EDIT: If you getting a horrible framerate change EnableOcclusion=1 to EnableOcclusion=0 in the enbseries.ini

Thanks for the replies.
I'll definitely be getting this for the PC then. I've already played/beaten it on the Wii (Gamecube version), but I've since sold the system. I tried the PS2 port (on the PS3), and it's a dark, jagged mess. I also hate the control setup, especially since it was so solid when using a 'Cube controller.
I've downloaded updated texture packs, D3D9 enhancements, and a pack of the cutscene movies encoded at a higher resolution. I've also snagged the Xbox 360 controller button mod, as that's what I'd be using to play.
Now all that's left is to buy the game, which I'll do when I get my next round of Best Buy reward certificates. -
Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 are on PC but those ports are trash. Youre better off emulating the PSone versions of those games, which is perfectly legal provided you own the game and a PSone.
Also, the games aiming is PERFECTLY fine, it emulates what it felt like with a controller, and importantly to feel vulnerable. -
Hrm... interesting. I've beaten the entire game (both normal and Pro) and all bonus missions on both the GC and Wii.
I'm interested in the PC version for the mods.... though I doubt it adds enough to warrant buying a 3rd version :-D
How well does the keyboard/mouse work vs. controller? I know out of the 3 console versions (I've played them all) the Wii version is hands down the best. Almost al my shots are head shots... only minor complaint is that I wish I could turn by moving the wiimote to the edges of the screen. -
W A S D = Move/Aim (yes AIM!)
Left Shift = Knife
Right Shift = Draw Weapon
Right Control = Run
Enter = Fire
As weird as it sounds, it works perfectly fine in practice, recreates holding a controller. Mouse support is WORSE IMHO -
Wow... so thats kinda... bad. If I remember, thats how it worked in the GC/PS2 version. In the wii, you can aim anywhere on the screen. Makes it REALLY easy.
And fun cause I get 90% headshots :-D Even with pistol at long distances. -

Use an xbox 360 controller with it. It is by far the best control to use and it is fully supported out of the box. Since they ported the PS2 version, you must download hires texture packs, which are made from the gamecube version lol. Heres a good link
