Yo, I'm thinking of buying a toshiba qosmio for gaming, it's a 15 incher with a 9700 gts. The laptop's max resolution is 1280x800; do you guys think thats kind of low and it wont look good for gaming?![]()
I was also wondering if the 9700 gts would be able to handle higher resolutions when playing games in general without lagging![]()

1280x800 is perfectly fine for a 15.4" laptop, though if possible you might want to go for 1440x900.
9700M GTS should be okay for higher resolution gaming, but there may still be some imminent lag time. Best to ask someone who has the card. -
The 9700m GTS is definatly able to handle higher resolutions. Personally i'd want a 1680 x 1050 res screen at least to go with it(for the less demanding games)
-
Take a look at Asus G50..something from newegg-it has 9800gs and WSXGA+ screen and is just 1350.
-
thanks everyone i will check out the asus

The newegg model of Asus is G50vt-X2 and its a great deal for the money.
Personally the resolution is fine as you will be able to play all games at native resolution with highest settings. Altho higher res screens helps when doing normal stuff because there is more real state, I personally love the crisp image of native resolution gaming.
But well, be it 9700 GTS or 9800Gs and up, those cards are amazing and pack quite a punch so get the best screen you can and feel comfortable with! -
Whats wrong with a 1280x800?
-
If you are buying a laptop simply to play games / watch movies (at 720p, no higher) on and you're limited to a certain budget, it makes sense to buy a lower resolution display as your graphics card will cope better and you will be able to play upcoming games at acceptable levels of detail.
On the other hand, if you buy a laptop for primarily productivity reasons, or wish to watch higher-definition video/movie content, you want to aim for a WSXGA or WUXGA screen (1680x1050 and 1920x1200, respectively) as the greater screen real estate will allow you to fit more on the screen at once. The same also applies if you have money to burn and can invest in a serious graphics system (8800/9800 territory) which can drive the higher resolutions.
It all comes down to preference and cost. -
So 1280 x 800 is too small for a 9700m GTS.
What about a 9650m GT (GDDR2)? Would a screen of this size be suitable? -
If you are talking about games then it is hard to classify by resolution only. -
I'm wondering whats the ideal res for a 9650m GT, for games + movies + general use. -
If you max out details even at 1280*800...on newer games the 9700M GTS will struggle. -
not true, i'm maxing every game I have except crysis in 1440x900 with my 9700m gts with 2xaa or 4xaa
-
I would rather max out a game at 1440x900 than having to play it at medium at 1920x1200.
-
Yup. And bear in mind that the 9700 gts will begin to show it's limitations with newer games. I'd advise against 1900x1200 screens in laptops for this reason. I'd say max 1680x1080, I find a 1440x900 17" to be just fine.

The 9700Gts will slaughter any game except Crysis at 1280x800 guys, without effort. This isn't the 128-bit 9700Gt here, it's a legit high-end card.
I say get the Asus. The card is a bit stronger, plus, once you've seen 1680x1050 on a 15.4 inch screen, you will never go back to anything lower.
