Last night while playing Company of Heroes, my laptop suddenly shutdown. I rebooted and immediately check on the GPU temperature using HWmonitor. The GPU temperature was around 65 degree Celsius and I noticed that the temperature quickly rises and peak at 80 degree Celsius within 30 secs (this is while the GPU is idle). My normal idle GPU temperature is normally around 58 degrees Celsius and the max temperature while gaming is 80 degree Celsius. Could it be that my GPU (Ati mobility Radeon HD 3650 1 GB DDR2) is fried? One thing to take note is that I recently replaced Avira Antivir with Avast (the "Silent/gaming mode" is active on Avast). Could this be the cause?

80 degrees shouldn't shut down your laptop suddenly o_O GPU should be able to withstand to the hundreds before it gets fried

Have you played a game and peaked at 80 without any problems before or is this the first time it went this high?

As the above poster said, 80 degree is fine for gaming. There must be something else causing your laptop to shut down suddenly.

Maybe your thermal paste has dried up?

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough. It is not the 80 degree Celsius temperature that worries me but rather the rapid rising of the GPU temperature (65 - 80 degree Celsius within 30 secs). This is while the GPU is idle and not gaming.

Could it be due to Avast "Silent/gaming mode" being active?

I had never heard of such a thing happening. Is that even possible?

The guys said the GPU reached 80 C within 30 seconds, meaning it could have reached a much higher temp than 80 C when the machine shut down itself. Have you cleaned your the inside of your laptop recently? Accumulated dust could easily make your laptop overheat.

The rapid temperature rise of 65 - 80 degree Celsius was taken only after I restarted the laptop after it shuts down (this is while the GPU is idle). Also the inside of my laptop is almost dust free (just cleaned it about 5 days ago).

I suggest you monitor your in game temp using software like Rivatuner, closely observe your CPU/GPU temp when you game, then you will find out if the crash is indeed related to overheating.

im thinking also of a change in thermal paste of both cpu and gpu

I think I managed to resolve the GPU temperature issue. I reinstalled the graphic card driver and deactivated Avast "Silent/gaming mode". So far everything is fine. Been gaming for close to 3 hours now and the GPU temperature never exceed 80 degree Celsius.

    Edit:-
I had since removed Avast and reverted to Antivir as deactivating the Avast "Silent/gaming mode" had only temporary effect on the GPU temperature (problem started again when I restarted the laptop).

you should report that to avast
but it does seem strange that an antivirus can affect gpu temps

I also find it odd that an antivirus could have this effect. However the fact is the problem started when I installed Avast and cease when I had it removed.

    P.S.
I also had problems when I installed MSE a while ago (delay in detecting external devices, slow performance, etc). It seems only Antivir is compatible with my laptop.

many people here use both mse and avast and ive never heard of a problem between them an increasing cpu/gpu temps.
your solution could be purely coincidental, but then again monitor your system as something else may be the real cause.

I doubt it. I could feel hot air blowing out from the vent.

I've been doing exactly that. Will keep monitoring the GPU temperatures closely for the next couple of days.
