Well, first off if this has been brought forward please do not flame and send me a thread link. I have done a search.
Computer used in the one in my sig.
I decided to finally take the plunge and OC. So I began following the OC guide on this forum.
I clicked allow ocing and choose the reboot option. After the reboot is when I noticed it. When ever ANYTHING moved on the computer wether it was the pointer, scroller or opening a window the noise of the processing became VERY audible. I know its comming from top left corner of the keyboard and above it. But it is quite a bit louder then my Zalman NC2000B and cannot be droned out by music/video.
At first I believed it was me being paranoid so I pushed the memory clock 20Mhz and the noise continued. I know that this is a regular noise for a computer but the noise is at minimum 8X louder then usual now.
I have tried a reboot and no dice.
EDIT: May I add that every few seconds for about 10-20 seconds there is a loop it sounds like a click click same noise as usual computer usage but as if its a cycle.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you![]()

i suggest u try to uninstall and reinstall your drivers...that might work..
-
Are you sure you didnt Overclock your speakers? lol
Try a change of drivers, must be a bug since its an isolated case.
What drivers were you using? -
To the OP: Reinstall your drivers and revert back to stock clocks. If the noise persists, then maybe it's something else that is causing it. I don't think I've ever heard of a noisy graphics card. -
Drivers are 174.16, clock was stopped after 20mhz, restored to default. Which drivers are more stable/less noisy
-
Can you record the noise? Because I can't imagine something with no moving part making noise...
-
Yeah, recording would help. Also you would more likely hear no noise, and smell burning GPU.
-
My best guess is the power supply went flat line due to stress, stressing any circuits on the affected DC rails.
-
I have attempted to record and failed >.< sorry. But it is making a noise similar to a cpu under load just louder.
Hydra what do you mean the power supply went flat line? -
Unplug your Zalman NC2000 and place your notebook on a different surface. Reboot and see what happens.
Good luck. -
Well I have not yet reinstalled drivers as I want to make that one of my last resorts ( my games are running smoothly with these for the first time in a long time)
SonDa5 It reduced the volume of the noise making it bearable, actually I rebooted again with Zalman on and bang it was louder, I rebooted a third time with zalman off then turned it off and it held a lower volume. But why is the noise coming from the gpu area? -
Maby the Zalman device is not properly grounded and it caused a ground fault to your notebook.
This could be the case. A power leak through your USB cable to the Zalman then to "earth".
Electronics are very touchy.
Do you know if your electrical system providing power to your notebook is properly grounded?
Does your power source have any type of ground fault/power surge protection?
This should be considered in trying to figure out what happend. -
Yes I have a full electrical surge protector installed in my current location.
Its not too loud I can live with it but would you say send it to Dell? Everything else is now flawless on my lappy -
I will do more extensive testing tonight when I can get the house down to almost 0Db ( rural location of Canada so its easy)
-
Change your drivers to 169.04, these comply with OC'ing well.
I got more 3dmark points with 169.xx than 17x.xx -
Then again, considering OCing is what triggered the issue, I guess it is more likely you have some sort of electrical break or sheer in your GPU. In this case, you need to replace the part with the offending break (could be GPU or motherboard). The component was already defective anyway and the problem was not caused by OCing because from what you have mentioned you didn't actually raise clocks. -
Thanks Storm for your post VERY HELPFUL. I was trying to figure out what was where the sound was coming from after i did what i wrote below (reinstall drives and fix gpu noise)
Well I reinstalled drivers (Same ones) and noticed I got the sound off the GPU but now ironically the HD is making a similar noise just louder and more constant -.- -
-
All right is there a defrag guide ( using windows xp defrager) I use Japanese OS but I cant read much Kanji so i push a bunch of buttons I defrag guessing >.< until it appears to defrag
Thanks Storm! -
My guess was this "dirty" power was affecting something on your Vostro. My 1705 comes stock with a 90W adapter, the XPS comes with 150W adapter. Needless to say that upgrading ones adapter is fairly popular.
What happens when you boot on battery? What happens when you boot in "safe mode" and just battery? -
Hydra: Same with battery but the GPU was caused by drivers (fixed reinstalling drivers)
Currently its hard drive thrashing, I defraged ( took 10 minutes ) and no difference in noise. -
See if you can backup all of your essential data on that drive, just in case it fails. -
Already backed up
, Is there any way to keep the drive lasting longer ( Dell Japan wants the laptop between 3 weeks and 2 months so i said screw it)
Hydra is it worth going for a stronger adaptor? currently 90W -
I'm just worried that it might not be the hard drive. I hate giving bad advice. But I trust you know what the clicky hard drive sound is versus the electrical power hiss noise. -
I hope I do. Would a power hiss be constant while hard drive isnt as constant?
-
The hard drive is a clicky noise that is not completely constant. A power hiss would be constant, and might possibly change frequency depending on the load of your computer.
-
If your original 90W is not making strange noises or running very hot, then don't. A lot depends on the TDP of your 8600m when pushed, I'm guessing 35W? If you get an oder from the adapter and is running hot, back down on the OC and search for a suitable adapter.
For now you might back off on your OC so that StormEffect can work with you if you haven't already have the drive sorted out.
I don't know the Vostro, however Dell sent me a replacement drive for my 1705, one screw and was user replaceable, Dell Japan cannot do this?
Download HD Tune, free, and check for SMART errors and temps FWIW. -
My power adaptor runs VERY VERY WARM I have almost burnt my self ( without OC) twice. Would Dell exchange if I complain for a 150W?
I turned my OC off instantly as I noticed noises (memory bus +20 was all it was)
Not so far... I have tried to push them on many things and no dice. -
Nope, they will only replace original equipment. Check ebay or Japan equivalent for 120 or 150W-19V adapters in your plug style, whatever cheaper for you.
-
thanks guys thread closed
-
I hardly think you`ll need a 150W adapter for a T7100 and 8600M GT . You`ll never need that much.
-
No, he would never need the 150W adapter. If the price of the 150W is on sale or cheaper, then by all means. If your not sucking but 100W out of a 150W adapter, you should be running cooler adapter if the thing in not junk.
However, they tend to be 1.5x the size of the 90W.
My 150W runs maybe half the temperture as my OEM 90W.
