Hey guys, right now I have the standard RoadRunner Highspeed at 7 Mbps, paying $46.95 per month (But everytime when I do a speed test, it usually falls between 2~3 Mbps, kind of rip-off).

So I wanna switch to the cheaper Lite version, which is at 1.5 Mbps for $29.95 per month. Just wondering how this speed downgrade will impact my ping (mainly for COD2/4). Right now, I play on a COD2 server in Chicago and ping's usually between 50~70, even when another computer is playing or browsing websites.

Any inputs/thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would keep what you have because the chances are that you will definately notice a difference in ping times if you downgrade...I would though contact them and tell them that your not getting the full speed you paid for...

idk...ping times has to do with latency. Is there any co-relation between latency and down/upload speed?

When you play an online game, almost all the info is on your HD already (except mods)....so your download speeds arn't that improtant. Your latentcy is.

Ping doesn't have anything to do with the speed.

I guess you are on DSL? It's up to 7mbps. To get higher than 5, you phone line has to be ADSL2+, to get a speed higher than 3mbps, you pretty much have to live in downtown since the speed is directly proportional to the lenght of the phone cord between the modem and your telephone central (to get good speed you must be <4KM ).

The speed is the amount of data that can be transported every second, while the ping is the response time between your computer and the server.

In fact, japanese satellites can reach 2gbps connection speed, but they still have ~400 ping (it's the time the light takes to do home->satellite->ISP actually)

If road runner is cable and you don't get your full speed, call a tech right now. You probably have an old modem that doesn't support more than that (although that would surprise me) or your internal wires are in a very bad condition

Not just yet....I recommend testing your down and upload rate at different times of the day.

From what I've read (and experienced) Cable internet can be aflicted by many users on the same street(grid), because the cable line is shared...and just branched off. I've read about it somewhere....but in dense areas, with many people using cable internet, the speeds can drop into the crapper.

I've got roadrunner. During the day, around 5-8pm download speeds are about 75% of what they should be. If I do a test after midnight, and before 6 am....I get full speed.

Ping shouldnt be affected as it is a measure of latency. Though your data throughput will be reduced. Dont worry though 1.5mbps is more than enough for gaming.

I capped my brothers computer to 512kbps yet he games fine. (the rest of the 8-10mbps is reserved for me)

Yes but to only get 2-3mbps you'd need to have a lot of people on it.

80% of your speed is what you should have. I'm on 7.1 cable too and I get ~5.8 during the day and 6.6 on nights.

My connection is an ADSL2+ here in Australia. Yet i only get 6-10mbps due to my proximity to the local dsl exchange.

I wish i had lower attenuations and reach the full 24mbps :D

I had road runner for a long time, it was the best for awhile (when it first came out) but the problem with cable is you share your main connection with a HUGE area of people and being in Tampa a very highly congested area you definitly noticed loss in speed and latency in peak and even off peak hours.

I hardly ever got my speeds they said they would give us. While I had friends out in the "boonys" who always got there top speed.

The solution for me was when Verizon came out with fios and offered it in my area. They gave us a 15/2 service for the same price as roadruners 8/1 or what ever it was. So nearly double the speed for the same price without the same issues as cable has with sharing your hub with a large area of people.

Just recently I think they even gave us a free upgrade to 20/4 or something like that as all my speed test are giving me like 20/4 and I saw that if you order the service that 20/4 is now the low end connection and the high end is over 100/10

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.

    yes, it is cable.
I tested many times, from different testing websites (speedtest.net, etc, even on RoadRunner's own website), it always shows up around 3 Mbps. I don't know, it's probably the modem's fault or maybe RoadRunner's capping me.

Since I'm already using at 2~3 Mbps download speed, perhaps the 1.5 Mbps isn't bad. But nevertheless, I will definitely call RoadRunner and see what's going on.

    Did another test just now:

Why? Its the best internet I know of around here, and I get $5 off since I use them for phone too.

I'll run a speed test when I get home and you guys will be like o_O !!! for a $40 service.

Plus your download rate is only half of your speed, dont forget just as much information as your receiving from an online server for games your also sending information and your upload speed there is pretty low.

They don't have fios where I live, otherwise I would be there is a minute. RoadRunner has issues with its DNS servers here.

As someone who used to pay about $100 a month for a 2-channel ISDN line (including dial-in access to my ISP), I gotta say, cable-modem is well worth every penny!

As to the question of the thread, I would think the ping times would be no different.

Just got off with RoadRunner tech support, I'm sorry to say, no help at all, did bunch useless stuff that I already have done. They pretty much just read off what the screen says and then tell me what to do.

Anyways, I'm suspecting it's probably the house's cable's fault. In that case then, I'm gonna switch to the 1.5 Mbps package, since it doesn't seem like I will ever get any higher speed than 4 Mbps, the rest of the bandwidth is wasted on me.

They don't have FIOS everywhere. Damn I want FTTH here. It's so cheap. Due to the very poor DSL implementation here Cable has a speed monopole so we don't get a very good price/quality ratio. Their 30mbps up/1mbps down is $80 with a 30GB combined up/down cap . My 7.1mbps service is $40 ($10 package rebate, $10 12-months contract) with a 20GBdown/10GB up cap and the overchage fee is 0.0007955555555 cents/kilobytes (it's that precise, $7.95/GB)

Only thing I can say is I feel downed about my ping. 56ms? I have a feeling its because I was one of the first Fios adopters and its installed and running on PPPoE but all the new installs are DHCP. If I am not mistaken the main difference between the two (as far as performance) is that DHCP should have a lower ping.

It was cool of them to give us a free upgrade as we got the 15/2 package, but I just noticed a week ago that suddenly now I get 20/3 or maybe its supposed to be 20/4

i got charter, and it works good. i usually get ping in the 60's and i get the full download speed. but i think we're one of the only ones with charter on our block.
I went into verizon, dont think they have FIOS in hick town Washington (State) but they had a data transfer rate of 5 GB. per month for $60 a month. they're blood-suckers around here!
