    New news....I think!

According to a rough translation from a German website, Acer is planning to enter the games console market. Acer senior Vice President, James T. Wong, apparently broke the news at a press conference and said that whilst most consoles are closed systems based on PC technology, Acer will set an open standard. It is believed this could mean developers would not have to pay license fees for the publication of games on the Acer system.

This could mean that game developers would not have to pay license fees for the publication of plays on this system.

    What do you think?!

I only hope that if this comes true it will be a cheap console BUT it still will have the capability to match up with the next gen consoles(PS4, XBOX720?,Nintendo Wii squared?)

I don't know, I wouldn't put too much faith into it. At this late in the game, they would face STIFF competition and likely wouldn't make it.

Couldn't think of a better way for Acer to go bankrupt or lose money better spent on developing better laptops.

Is Acer going to spend $$$$ (on everything from manufacturing to advertising to online support) trying to compete with MS, Nintendo, Sony, etc with the only way to make it back by selling hardware? Ask the 3DO mfrs (Panasonic, Goldstar, etc) how that business model worked out last time......

If I'm not mistaken, it's not a console. It's a computer built to the specs agreed upon by the PC Gaming Alliance.

    From Engadget:

"Don't start hawking your 360 and PS3 just yet, but it sounds like PC industry upstart Acer is considering a bid for the console market, or at least some gamer market share, with a game machine based on "open standards." Of course, this could just mean a computer built to PC Gaming Alliance specs -- Acer is on the PCGA's board -- but Acer's James T. Wong did make comparisons to Nintendo and Microsoft's offerings, calling them closed and proprietary systems. With a history of console prices subsidized by game sales, it's hard to imagine an "open" platform being able to compete in that space -- and even harder to imagine a company like Acer getting that kind of traction with the consumer -- but even if it is just a PCGA spec machine, we don't think it could come soon enough for the struggling PC gaming market."
