Im new to this site so please excuse my noobieness.
I need to buy a laptop and i wanted to be able to play some leet games (I know I, myself, would prefer a desktop but at the moment i need a laptop) and I was wondering would this set up be able to play Oblivion or say... F.E.A.R?
1.6 duel core
1 gig ram (2 dimm)
256 ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1400
Windows XP of course.
the requirements of oblivion are X800 at least so if any of you have the X1400 and oblivion if would be great if you could help me out
THanks

It will run but the question is how low of a setting and performance are you willing to accept? Oblivion is a pretty graphics intensive game and the X1400 is not quite up to providing a fluid gaming experience. You are willing to settle for low settings and no AA, then it should be ok. You could do 1 or 2 things, or both: add more ram to 2gb and/or overclock the GPU.

thanks jujube yeah i will most likely add ram im just a little strapped on how much i should spend. but OC....Ive never heard anything good about it. what exactly will it do?
What about a Nvidia 7300? -
The Nvidia 7300 is a weaker card than the x1400, so don't go that route. If you are willing to play on low settings the x1400 can run it based on what I've seen. But you're getting what you pay for, a mid-range card. I'd suggest looking into an Asus S96J with the x1600 which is about 2x more powerful than the x1400. It can be had with respectable specs for around 1300 bucks. Check out powernotebooks.com or Gentechpc.com to customize one.

thanks guys sadly i cannot spend $1300 so i guess i will have to go with the X1400 i should be happy enough till i Grad then im gonna build me a nice desktop. =)

umm does the performance in the ATI go from X600-X1900? like better to worse? EX. would the X1300 be better then X600 or X800?
-
With ATI's numbering system, the thousands digit is the series, and the hundreds digit is the performance. The x1300 will perform worse than an x700 for instance.

thanks
OHHH i sooo hope this X1400 will handle oblivion -

Here's a chart where you can find more useful info regarding performance rankings:

x1400 will handle oblivion but on lower settings and resolution with no AA. FEAR will do a little better than Oblivion.
ATi's numbering system is listed as generation first then the cards rank within that generation. Theres the X series which is last generation and the x1K series which is this generation.
Ex: x300, x600 x700, x800
These are the ATi X series cards (general listing theres different versions of each). In order from weakest to strongest.
x1300, x1400, x1600, x1800
These are the x1K series cards (again, general). They are again in order from weakest to strongest, they are an improvement on the previous generation cards but are still in the same performance catagorey. -

If you want to run Oblivion decently get at least an X1600 256mb.

well Im pretty sure that it will run.
im reading the oblivion post http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=45637
so far im on page 25 lol
so far i kno the X700 can forsure run it well and...thats about all
but i get the idea that the GO7400, X1400, X700, GO6600 are all around the same area.
ill keep reading the post see what i can find. thanks for the link chaz. -
ok ok ok
so am i right? the X700 is better then the X1400 and the X1400 is better then the GO7400 but the GO6600 is better then all of those? -
What laptop are you looking at? You should check out this unit, it's pretty awesome. It comes with a X1600, which is MUCH better than the X1400. It's out of stock until 8/14, but it's an amazing price for only $1060!
