I play Starcraft, but now when I run it (on my new laptop), it has black stripes to the left and right, with the screen in the middle due to my 1440x900 resolution.

Is there any way to get it to play so the whole screen is filled? Will this happen with every game I play?

I think that's because StarCraft doesn't employ any widescreen resolutions.
If you want, you want configure your graphics card to stretch the display to fill the full screen, but it will distort the image.

LOL. Starcraft was released 1998, of course it doesn't support widescreen resolutions.

Starcraft is a 2d game and has a set resolution of 640x480, which is a 4:3 non-widescreen aspect ratio (whereas your screen is 16:10). There is an option in your windows display properties that will allow you to "stretch" out the image to fill your screen and therefore not have side borders. Try it out and see if the slightly distorted aspect ratio bothers you.

I think there is a setting in your graphics card that can do this. What do you have? I am not really sure about ATI, but Nvidia i believe you can have the borders stretched.

Try messing the settings in there.
