When I first started Metro 2033, I turned down the settings to "Normal" (medium) and switched the dx mode from 10 to 9. The game started and the framerate wasn't too good, I'm guessing around or under 20. I switched the dx mode to 10 and there was a noticable frame increase, I'm guessing 5-10 fps.

When I tried playing STALKER Clear Sky with dx10.1 (I have a 10.1 card) Full Dynamic Range lighting it had the opposite effect. I'm confused.

I guess that in Stalker you are enabling more effects (lightning) which costs more recourses. If you however switch the rendering to a newer DX without activating more effects, like probably in 2033, you are experiencing a performance boost because newer DX works more efficient.

This was the point of DX10, to make it more efficient for the GPU therefore increasing framerates. As xedi said, if the graphical effects are the same and you switch from DX9 to DX10 there should be a framerate improvement.

The problem was the devs were just using DX10 as a graphics booster, and not using it efficiently.
