im looking at notebooks, and a 14.1" Fujitsu comes with S3 430ULP, 256MB graphics. I have never heard of S3, any good? how does it compare to NVIDIA and ATI?

S3 is a low-end GPU vendor. I'd expect gaming performance around that of a good integrated graphics chip (like Intel's x4500).

Isn't that from VIA? On my 2004 Compaq desktop, it has a VIA chipset and has integrated graphics by that same name.

Yeah i saw that a couple of weeks ago, couldn't find any bench marks for it though after an hour worth of searching. Its supposed to be a low power dedicated GPU. Fujitsu did have the X4500 in the S6520, but then they switched it to the 430ULP. Must be a reason for that.

S3 is still around as a PC GPU vendor? Wow! I remember my first PC had an 8MB S3 ViRGE video card. Was perfect for games at the time too. LOL. Had 24bit color instead of 16bit! Wow!

As far as I know, any notebook S3 solution is pretty poor, however there are some new Chrome desktop cards that actually compete very well with low end dedicated cards.

Via's GPU, the S3 chrome, can game about as well as the GMA900, I've used on on an Everex notebook a year ago. Pretty poor performance, but it's for so called "green" notebooks.
