I recently purchased an ASUS S96J from powernotebooks.com. It's my first foray into mobile computing, and I like it quite a lot. Thank you to everyone at these forums for suggesting it to me. I'm glad I bought it instead of a huge 17" E1705 like I originally thought I would.
I currently use Windows 2000 on this machine because I enjoy holding out against Micro$oft and refusing to upgrade to bloated operating systems that offer me nothing extra for my money and memory. However, I noticed that the best X1600 drivers are exclusive to Windows XP. Currently, I only get around 3600 in a 3dmark05 test with older Windows 2000 drivers (this is a T2500 2.0 Ghz with 2GB of 667 DDRII). Do you think an upgrade to Windows XP would utilize the power of this system better?
Also, I did some reading around about dual-core support in different operating systems. Does Windows 2000 lack dual-core support, or could XP just do it better? Thanks again for your time.

whaaaa? 2000 on a S96j lol ? XP is actually pretty stable and its worth upgrading to XP home. If you want an indication of how XP works on the S96, I have about 29-31 standard processes running and thats from 45 unwanted processes in the background. Yes there are people that still run Win95 and 98, but if you want to really use full capabilities of the notebook,XP is a good option(or linux)

IMHO, Win2k is just a bad idea all around. A lot of people like to say that it was the most secure Windows ever (including Microsoft), but the facts say different. It was rushed out after being delayed forever, it has proven to be one of the most insecure versions (evident by the fact that several viruses and worms attack Win2k while XP is immune). Just from my personal experiences, XP is much more stable, more user-friendly, more secure, and more compatible. I made the jump from 2k to XP a few months ago, and it was night and day difference. XP even performed faster than 2k. Believe me, when you start running into problems like this more and more with programs requiring XP, you'll soon come to hate Win2k. Plus, XP looks better. I resoundingly say upgrade to XP. But like I said, I hate 2000.

I prefer 2k myself, but if you want to game XP seems to be the better choice.

"offer me nothing extra for my money and memory"
"the best X1600 drivers"
Well you just proved right there it offers something.
Stop torturing yourself and upgrade.
Congrats on the S96j by the way. I did the exact opposite, thought I was going to get a Z96j forever and then ended up getting an E1705 today. -

That is kinda of stupid not to upgrade to XP, it does not come with extra bloatware, I <3 XP.
Get XP now.

There are a lot of people out there still on 2000, and it has been called the last great operating system Microsoft made. I use both it and XP and have no problem switching between them. 2000 is a bit more retro, but it is blazing fast and runs great/without problems on any system I've used it on. 2000 will run faster than XP because it has been coded to run on older hardware. However, the latest and greatest software (games...) runs best on XP. I'd go to XP if you are a gamer.

I've used both and I think XP is much better although sometimes its quite annoying and complicated.
Hopefully Vista will change things.
