Does anyone know the general hardware requirements that will be needed to play SC2? I can't seem to find anything. I plan to get a computer with either an 8600M GDDR3 or a 9500m GDDR2 this summer, and I want to make sure it will be able to play it.
Thanks in advance.
-
Knowing Blizzard, the game will probably run on anything from the 8400 and up.
AN 8600M will most certainly be able to play it. Maybe not full details, but it will .
Make sure to have a pretty good CPU, like the T9300. -
This is what these guys say, link.
Starcraft 2, here's the guesstimate:
Minimum System Requirements for Starcraft 2
Processor: 1.4 Ghz Processor
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Graphics card: 128 MB RAM video card capable of Hardware TnL. DX10 is not required, but will be supported by SC2 and Blizzard are considering adding DX10 specific effects.
Pixel Shader 2.0 (Officially Confirmed)
Harddisk:
Soundcard: A DirectX-compatible 16-bit sound card.
OS: Windows Wista, Windows XP or Mac OS. (Officially Confirmed)
Connection: Access to Blizzard Entertainment's online gaming service, Battle.net, requires a low-latency, active Internet connection rated at 28.8 Kbps or faster.
Multiplayer games played over a LAN require an active connection to a TCP/IP network.
Looks to me like 8600 GT should play reasonably well 8700m GT or 8800m to get the max out of it. -
Wow, you need a harddisk?
Darn -
-
I know, next they'll be telling you need a CD drive or something...
-
Will you need a monitor that supports more than 256 colors?
-
We better stop now before the mods kill the thread.
Come on,seriousely , have you seen the pictures and trailers?
It`s cartoony, no way will it require a super computer to max it.
Just a fast CPU . -
Imagine that. A CPU bounded modern game?
But I doubt that anyway. Even cartoony can have lots of polys. -
I say fast CPU since it`s an RTS with quite possibly, 2000 units moving in the same time...
-
Blizzard are all about low requirements, i dont think you should worry
-
2k units? I thought this was a Blizzard RTS.
-
They're setting unit caps ~150 IIRC, so I wouldn't expect more than like 600 units on a map
-
If you have at least an 8400 or 8600 and a decent CPU, you shouldn't worry at all about the requirements for Starcraft 2. Blizzard puts a lot of work into optimization and efficiency to maximize the hardware their games will run on.
-
In starcraft 1 anyways, the game would max out before you could hit he unit cap in an 8 player game.. Booo mind control.
-
just a fast cpu!lol
when sc2 put on sale? -
No surefire release dates yet, it's expected Q4 of 2008 AFAIK
-
£º)
q4 of 2008?
god.....haha,just waiting -
i wouldn't be worrying about my machine but the game itself, the graphics look like 4 years old and i see a lot of stuff from SC1. i hope it's not just a prettier version of SC1
-
-
SC1 allowed for 50 units each side I think. So four player game = 200 units.
I don't see them increasing the unit cap. That added to the strategy.
As far as requirements, X3100 meets the needs with TnL, SM2.0, and 128MB, and probably a 2.0GHz or faster Pentium 4 CPU (That's like a 1.2GHz new technology Intel) -
I`ve played SC1 with over 2000 units on a map.
Man,that was crazy -

i really doubt rts games can get better than sc1 ^_^
they are making sc2 easier to play, but I heard it still has that sc feel while playing. So it can't be that bad -
I hate the fact that they still have not announced when it`ll be released...
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Probably will announce it at this years BlizzCon in October.
-
Darn it, it`s taking too long.
The graphics will already be outdated and people would have grown beards by then.
Heck, I know, I`m in that situation... -

I was at Gamestop the other day and in their book of releases it said December. It actually had a set date. Not sure how accurate that is
-
December 25th
-
INEEDMONEY Homicidal Teddy Bear
Hehe. Yeah it was around Xmas time.
-
You absolutely will not know the release date until beta testing is complete and it goes gold. Then it will be on store shelves within a few weeks. Blizzard is one of the few companies that develop and publish on their own and don't have to rush a project out the door because a publisher needs to meet their quarterly profits.

- Core 2 Duo 3 GHz or Athlon X2
isnt that a bit too much? -
I hope they increased the unit cap, or removed it completely.
I remember when I was playing protoss and massing carriers. I keep hitting the 200 supply cap, so annoying! -
I hope they keep the cap.
If people are allowed to build thousands of units, the strategy goes down the drain, it`s just Serious Sam all the way. -
good point
-
don't quote me on this, but most likely this is the case -
I think the unit cap is a good thing, and typically due to the map sizes, it was difficult to exceeed that cap anyhow due to land area constraints and placing unit capacity buildings. Of course when things like carriers and battlecruisers cost like 8 units, you can reach your cap very quickly. Again, this adds to the strategy so that you're not amassing tons and tons of units to attack. It forces you to come up with a strategy.

What magazine is that 256 MB minimum on the video card from?
Blizzard is all about releasing games on existing hardware. Granted the 8400M isn't exactly Crysis ready but I'd be surprised if it wouldn't handle the game.
I'd be kind of disappointed if I couldn't get it to run on my Vostro -
That magazine's full of crap. Blizzard isn't even close to releasing SC2 let alone the requirements. They said they'd like to get it out in 2008, but a realistic goal is 2009.
-
If they are even talking about a release date, they are close enough to be in serious testing. That also means they are at the point of doing optimization to the engine, not major feature additions. That means they can realistically start talking about target specs. Will the change? Likely. Could we have a good ballpark? You bet.

Blizzard wont submit to shame and do what everybody else does and release a game in a unfinished unpolished state and then slowly over time have to patch the problems and bugs.
You can bet they will take there time and make sure that its tried and true before it is released. Too many games lose fanbase because they get released in a state of total chaos.
I can name a bunch of games that could have been really good that I bought and no longer play because I got sick of waiting for fixes/patches.
> Shadowrun
> Hellgate London
Are the two that strike me off the top of my head, both big name games both fairly new, both 50$, both pieces of crap.
In addition both of those games require you to pay to play them in there full and best state, while starcraft has always had one of the best online gaming systems, battle.net is fast, effective, and very streamline. -
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Blizzard also has already denied the specs and claimed they were speculation.
-
Probably an unitentional leak. Wonder if anyone's been fired from Blizzard lately...
-
I don`t think anyone got fired.
Probably, since nobody had an official word about this, somebody wanted to give people hope and posted some bogus requirements.
Although,I`m pretty sure they`re close to reality. -
-
ROFL. -
INEEDMONEY Homicidal Teddy Bear
I'm sure anyone with a decent video card will be able to play the game. There's no need to worry.
I wonder where Gamestop got their date from. I mean...they don't say just December. They have an exact date of release...
