It basically only helps to reduce loading times.
Perhaps if you have some extremely high res textures it might improve framerate very slightly.
Also, if you play a game with lots and lots of mods installed, it can be a significant help because the loading times become shorter. -

Apart from gaming, it also reduces your general boot up and shutdown times for your computer, of course.
IMO the real benefit is not for games, but more for people who work with really large files in apps like Photoshop, etc. -
If a game uses stream loading then it can help reduce stuttering. That's about it as for playability.

Recently got a OCZ Vertex 2E SSD, and oh my, what a difference, i use it for my OS and some programs etc, i will never go back to a mechanical drive again, the speed increase in everything i do is dramatic.
I still use external 2.5 drive for files and storage etc.
