ha, wow here's hoping once it's out of beta it's easier... but yeah I've needed this for years, and that's using a 750GB dedicated to Steam alone! Thanks Valve finally! And thanks for the heads up +1

yeah, a step in the right direction! But unfortunately it only works on select games so really isn't very useful quite yet...

it has been available in the beta update program for awhile just like Big Picture. A very helpful function for those with limited hard drive space :D

It seems to me this functionality is primarily important for people who a) want to preserve space on their system drive, b) want to install a large game library on a secondary drive, or c) want to install their games on a secondary partition.

Is there any way built-in to migrate games from one directory to the other? That way you could keep a large library installed between an SSD and a hard drive, but migrate games on and off the SSD in order to get good performance on the games you're playing while preserving valuable SSD storage space. Of course, everything that this functionality offers could already be done manually with a few tricks, and it would have been nice if they had recognized and catered to community demand several years ago, but I guess it's kind've nice that they've finally done it.

Okay, one final question: is this still just a Beta thing, or have the built it into the stable client now?

This makes a lot of sense. I was using third party applications to set up the ntfs reference point things

I just installed steam to the HDD. Seemed the obvious thing to do.

I've done the same thing. Important games are moved onto the SSD.

So does this still work? The "console" tab doesn't show up for me after I add "-dev" to the steam shortcut.

    It's released now.

Find a game, click install and before clicking next make sure you choose where to install it by either making a new directory or yeah choose the one you made before.

not sure if it's because I am using the Steam Beta or not though :)

as mentioned, just watch out with grand plans at this point.... it only works on certain games, not sure when or if the entire library will support the feature.

I was disappointed, I wanted to install Steam and my current couple of games on my SSD and have the bulk of the catalog on my HDD, but only a handful of games worked with the new installer.

Bummer, I haven't even gotten around to installing my 750gb hdd in the optical bay yet, my caddy is still on the way. I guess I'll still be deleting/redownloading games quite a bit.

It's always been easy enough to copy the download repository to an external hard drive...

By that I mean you don't have to keep redownloading - once you want to uninstall a game you can copy the repository to an external drive, then just put it back when you want to reinstall. Saves you and Steam a lot of bandwidth and time.

Gotcha, I was just saying I'll do that once I install my hdd in the optical bay. Never thought of doing that before though; thanks for the tip. It's a simple solution now that I think about it lol.
