Hello. Does anyone happen to know if a Sager NP8170 with an HD 6990M will run SWTOR on high settings? I'm getting the laptop either way, but I'd like to know before getting my hopes up. Thank you.

HD 6990M Will most certainly be able to do so Baka believes ._. Baka assumes that siobhanatooty has a decent CPU to go with that since the GPU is that powerful.

Thank you both for your help. I am also thinking of putting 16GB of RAM at 1600MHz in the machine. It's capable of taking 1866MHz, but I can't afford 16G of that speed. I like to have multiple programs open at once, so I don't want to risk having only 8GB. I'm guessing that I won't even notice the difference between 1600MHz and 1866MHz even on games like SW and Skyrim. Does anyone have any experience comparing the two?

Unless you bench for high scores and/or have lots of spare cash, i would suggest to stick with 1600. Same thing for either 8 or 16GB, what kind of programs do you want to open simultaneously? I never reach 8GB personally unless i run test.

I think you won't notice a difference between 1333Mhz and 1600Mhz either. 16GB RAM is only needed to run a server, open several huge and I mean huge 3d image files or some other very specific tasks. Windows 7 eats up 1 gig, any game eats up 2-3GB at most with rare exceptions of games with memory leaks. So unless you plan to run 3 instances of Battlefield 3 simultaneously, I doubt you would ever need more than 8GB.

Why do people think SWTOR is a graphically demanding game? The graphics just seem average to me lol compared to games like TERA, final fantasy, etc.

Well... You see, I bookmark so many sites that it takes forever to find anything. Instead of bookmarking sites that I'm only going to use for a few days I just leave them open now. Then, I open Visual Web Developer to do a little work, and IE to access my work e-mail, but I have to take a break once in a while. I don't want to lose my place in the code, so I just minimize it and open up a game or something. For instance, right now I have two instances of Chrome running (I'm trying to go easy on this low-end computer) for a total of 16 pages, plus web developer and it's using 2 gigs of RAM. I'm just worried that if I open SWTOR or Skyrim or some other modern game I'll just use too much RAM.
I'm starting out with 8GB of 1333MHz, so maybe I'll just try that out before jumping the gun and upgrading. I do have other (more important, probably) things I could use the money for.
    Thanks again!

Also be advised that only Plug and Play RAM with 1600Mhz might yield any benefits to performance, even then the difference is minimal. With your described usage I doubt you would ever need more than 8GB unless you run several modern games at the same time in alt tabbed mode or on dual screens.

The graphics are 'ok' for an MMORPG (could have been a lot better indeed), but also, it would appear the game is relatively demanding as well.
But I would sooner attribute this to bad optimization.

Aside from that, a high end setup like the one OP has will/should be able to run the game seamlessly.

actually the world in SWTOR has very high res textures if you play maxed out settings. The armor models just arent so high res, also some player model textures. But they are going to be updating that soon enough! They should increase foliage draw distance too.

For gaming, you'll never notice any change in RAM speed at all. The proof is in the pudding. AnandTech found less than one FPS difference going from 1333 Mhz RAM to 2133 Mhz RAM. I'd value that type of gaming boost at a maximum of $0.
AnandTech - Sandy Bridge Memory Scaling: Choosing the Best DDR3

A much better way to spend money is to get a SSD. Now, there's something you'll notice every step of the way. It won't help the FPS numbers though.

Sager / Clevo does offer decent performance for your hard earned cash, but i was also impressed by my buddies MSI GT780DX.

Agreed! Even though mine is a Clevo build - same difference. I play MAX or ULTRA settings on everything with the SLI, but I can run SWTOR with 1 GPU on HIGH because like it has been mentioned already it's just not that graphically-challenging of a game. Even though YES it looks great on HIGH. But yes, AGREED on Clevo/Sager laptops - the BEST! :D
