Bit of a story.
But I got a core 2 duo desktop for $100 and I already had a windows 7 licence.
Wanted a little more than integrated to get over the hump for some games.
Finally got a 610GT over the weekend (biggest card to safely run with my power supply) and it was enough to get Fry Cry 2 to run, going to hopefully get borderlands going with resident evil 5..
But also on the same day my dad got his new Lenovo x230 with the i5 Ivy Bridge and all the goodies you can think of (dock and all).
The windows experience rates his computer higher in every category.
Moral of the story, see and HD 3000 with a 610 optimus get the faster more efficient HD 4000.

Oh yeah, HD 4000 is definitely a good IGP for 720p gaming. Definitely eliminates need for a low end dedicated card like a 610m or 620m.

Dang HT. I remember when you had only a 4 digit post count lol.

Yea but you got the desktop for 100$ and you can upgrade the PSU and graphics card and monitor.
Oh hey, how bout this weather here in minnesota eh? -
Sad story indeed

Sad story is the gt610.

Yeah the ThinkPad X230 can be a surprising powerhorse in a tiny little package - a real sleeper! As HTWingnut pointed out the HD4000 is a decent IGP, certainly leaps ahead of the older integrated graphics cards of before. I still have my Core 2 Duo desktop but I use that as my Office PC now even though that has a AMD HD5670 GPU inside, a bit of an overkill for word documents and emails!

You can probably replace the PSU, and add a fairly cheap GPU (I believe a desktop 460 can be had for around $100 if you look hard, and that will do 1080p/high settings on most games), and get a few more years' useful life out of that machine. When you end up needing a new CPU/mobo, you'll already have the GPU/PSU to power them.

I thought about a new power supply... But it is really only a core 2 duo and its main purpose if for school stuff. I just wanted to get over the integrated hump for a little gaming while I work in a boring college town this summer.
But it still amazes me that a desktop card is out played by a laptop with integrated. -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
If Intel gets their drivers right, then yeah the HD 4000 is not shabby for a 720p Medium gaming machine. Lots of low-end dedicated are only holding on because they got the better drivers.
Sad story (kind of lol)
