Please pardon my ignorance, but I always seem to say 'make sure that your temps are "safe"', and I keep hearing vague allusions to a notebook exploding in rings of fire.

What are safe temps for an OC'ed 8400m GT? Before OCing, temps were around 66-69 idle and topped out at 79 under load, but usually stayed well under that. Now, they typically stay close to 80 under load, but they sometimes spike as high as 85. Is this safe?

Yeah thats fine. GPUS get to over the 100s. Though specifically I am not sure about the 8400 but with that temperature you are fine.

My 8400GT never go beyond 80C even if OCed..Maybe you need a can of compressed air... That being said, I know some other GPU goes even higher (8400GS in XPS1330 goes for 90C range, for example) so I am not too concerned.

i think the geforce 8 series should be able to tolerate higher temperature than the 7 series. i think the limit temperature would be 120c but of course ideally to prolong the life of the card the temperature should be around 70-80ish under load, 90ish at the limit of my liking.

if you're worried don't overclock. i seriously against overclocking. just not worth it. unless reliability and/or longevity is not a concern.

oh the news about a notebook exploding is because of its battery. li-ion battery cells short circuited or something or rather.

100 Degrees??? My 8800GTS doesn't even get that high. Keep the card under 85 degrees and you should be fine

The card you got there is a desktop one. Those run much cooler than the laptop 8 series. Therefore it is not recommended to compare desktop ones to laptop. My 8600M GT runs in the high 80's to mid 90's range. :)

wow... 80's to 90's!?! when i had my alienware i had to send the lappy back because when i told the rep that it reached 79 C he said its lowering performance on my computer... he said if it goes anywhere between 80-85, thats when i have a problem... but that was with a 7900gt...

my 8700m gt NEVER goes above 65C as far as i've seen.. which is amazing after such long periods of gaming

Don't worry...The card throttles at about 95C in order to prevent damage... ;)

its a toshiba x205, i bought a coolmat for my last 2 laptops but the crazy thing is that this one does not need it - it the way the fans for the cpu and gpu are positioned. they push out the air from each side of the laptop and does a wonderful job. also it is elevated a tad bit off the surface so that the heat doesnt resonate back into the system. never had a laptop that stayed this cool no matter how long you play.

My MacBook Pro GPU will hit up to 87 degrees Celsius. It generally runs about 82 degrees Celsius while gaming. If I have two monitors running a game, It'll sit at 93 degrees Celsius. So far nothing has broken and performance is great. The bottom gets fricken hot though.
