I would like some information on how good this configuration is. I will mostly be using this to play wow in a pretty high res. with most of the gfx turned up. Here are the specs:
cpu: 760 P-M 2.0
memory: 512 Dual Channel
hdd: 40gb 5400rpm
cd-rom/dvd-rom: 8x - 24x
video: Radeon X700
monitor: 15.4 wsxga+
I am on a budget and trying to keep it below 1600.00
-
I think it's pretty good. I believe Chazman421 owns the same exact model. He would be the best person to take his opinion from.
-
Yea he does, but we actually responded before he did
But the x700 256mb will play WoW in high res just fine
I do and its awesome -

Ha you guys beat me to answering questions about my own laptop. Hey, the more opinions the better as far as I'm concerned!
About that configuration - you are not going to get very far with 512MB of RAM. Get at least 1GB. Upgrading it aftermarket will save you money, a 1GB module of 200-pin DDR2-533 runs about $67 on www.Newegg.com.
Also - make sure that the 5400RPM hard drive you are getting is Serial ATA, not Ultra ATA - it's a bit faster, plus it uses slightly less power.
Since you are on a budget, I'd knock down the processor to a 1.86GHz, you won't notice a difference between that and the 2.0Ghz. -
sounds good.. I noticed the 5720 with a 7800gtx but it is over my budget, any recommendations for a sager with a 6800?

There are no Sager's with a Go6800 option except for the 9890 and 9750, which are well above $2,000USD.
The Dell Inspiron 9300 with the Go6800 [I am not sure if they still offer it or not, might want to check - look in the Dell forum].

Alienware, if they dont bother you, just released a new 17 inch widescreen laptop, the Area 51 m5700. for 1,818 you can get one of these with these specs:
Pentium M 1.8 ghz 2mb cache
17" wxga screen at 1280 x 800
Windows Xp Home
1 gig ddr2 ram
80bg (7200 rpm) SATA hard drive
24x10x24 CD-RW / 8X DVD Combo w/Software MPEG2 Decoder
NVIDIA Geforce go 6800 with 256 mb cache
in my opinion, for $1800 thats a great value. Im a pretty big Sager fan, but Alienware is my definate runner up. Id definately consider this if i didnt have enough to afford my new 5720. The ONLY thing id be weary about with this is the 90 day warrantee. I personally believe that a warranty on a laptop is almost a requirement, but thats just me.
Also, if 1800 is too much for you, just knock down the hard drive a little bit. if you went with the 80 gig hard drive at 5400 rpms instead of the 7200, that would knock you down to almost exactly 1600, and shipping is free!
EDIT: I also realise that Alienware doesnt have the greatest reputation with customer care, but I wouldnt know first hand, for Ive never owned an Alienware. I just know quite a few people around my area that do have them, or are looking to buy one. I figure Id try to give you both the positives and negatives to this. If you were to go with this computer, you may actually only want the 90 day warrenty, and then hope and pray that nothing was going to happen to it afterwards.
I hope this helps you with your search a little bit -

If you are on a budget, I recommend upgrading your memory aftermarket. The memory is almost always overpriced. www.Newegg.com has a great notebook memory section.

Oh! Ok gotcha.
Well, that is a very basic configuration, as I am sure you are aware. The 512MB of memory is a performance killer . . .hope you plan to upgrade soon to 1.5 or 2GB's.
Have you thought about checking out the Asus Z81SP? I know it uses a Pentium 4, but you can get more for your money. PowerNotebooks has that too. -
It's cool. The Asus looks promising but it does not have a 17" or a 7800.. the processor is nice - i would have to deal with heat and low battery life also.
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Yeah, just putting that out there as an option. I normally don't recommend getting a notebook if you have to go with the base configuration.
Here's a notebook you can check out - go to www.RawPowerPC.com, they have a 17" with a Go6800. -
I think i am leaning towards the Asus the only down side is the 14". The Sager has such a good rep.
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Yeah. Well, if you do get the base configuration on the Sager 5720, it comes with a good processor and graphics card, display, burner, etc. All you would have to do is upgrade the hard drive and memory . . . up to you of course.
-
if you feel comfortable with goin with less RAM and HDD space then by all means go with the 5720. You're getting a great computer with a pretty high reputation thats upgradable up to 2 gigs. Good luck with your decisions -
I decided on upgrading to 1gb of memory. The hdd space will still be 40gb sata. This laptop is going to be used for wow and probably DOD:source and doing some homework.
