yup, unfortunately, for now, the xps m1330 will be only with the GS option.. so we cannot include it in the list, yet ! :(

Looks like a pretty short list. I dont know of any. The only 8400M GT that i know of is used in the Sony Vaio FZ but it is a 15,4".

Yup, for now, but there will be at least an Asus, a Compal, a Zepto, a P1 and maybe (God help!) the XPS 1330 !!
Sony FZ lost it's place in the list but the SZ refresh has huge chances. HP dv2500t lost it's place last night too ! :(

Nope. The SZ has been confirmed to have an 8400M G. The XPS M1330, for all the complaints about it not having a GT, still has the most powerful graphics of any laptop under 4.5lbs.

For the Asus, Compal, P1, and Zepto, do you mean ones with more powerful GPUs?

I heared someone mention a Zepto with a 8400M before. Not sure if it will be a GT.
Asus has the A8sc but that only uses a 8400M G.

I think because the 8400M GT will perform similar to the 8600M GS it will use similar amount of power and produce as much heat as the 8600M GS. So most companies will opt for the 8600M GS because it looks more powerful by the name.

The Lenovo Thinkpad T61 has an Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M, which is based off the 8400M GT core, I believe.

    Thinkpad T61p
is roumored to have 570m quadro, that would be equivalent, we'll see on Friday if they offer the superior 14" SXGA+ model.

The 13.3" Samsung Q70 (2.03kg = 4.5lb) is also expected to have the 8400M GS.

Personally, I would have preferred a lesser GPU since battery life is my priority and I strongly suspect that Samsung's generous cooling system could accommodate a more powerful GPU.

Well, Asus has the F8, which is getting either an ATI HD2600 or an 8600M of some kind, Compal has the IFT00 with some flavor of 8600M, P1 will probably get a version of one of those two, and Zepto has the 6224 with the 8600M GT.

The most likely candidate to be the first notebook on this list is the refresh of the Asus V2J. It seems to be most logical that the 8400M GT will go into it.

I think the Asus V2J will get a 8400M GS. The laptops that got a SR upgrade and used to have a go7400 / x1400 seem to get the 8400M GS and all the ones that had a go7600 / x1600 get a 8600M GS and some aimed at highend/gameing even get the 8600M GT. Leaves the 8400M GT as the odd one out.

The V2J had an X1450 :p its right in the middle too. Same with the FE: it had options for both the Go7400 and a really weak Go7600, so it was kinda in the middle too. The 8400GT seems to be the 'mid level card' in every sense of the word. Unfortunately, there won't be many laptops using it.

Yeah, but unfortunately we don't know if it's the 8400M G, GS, or GT. Logically I think Vivek is right. Considering the thinness of the SZ, I don't really see how Sony could cram anything better than an 8400M G into the chassis. I really want to see how Dell puts the 8400M GS into the M1330 and solves the heat issues that are bound to erupt.

The 8400M GT is really just an underclocked 8600M GS. Since the 8600M series seem to require a 14" chasis at minimum, I think the 8400M GT is just too hot to run in any 13" or smaller laptop. :(

I agree with this. With the slimming down of the XPS 1330 I don't think it'll be possible. Either too much heat or underclocking the 8400M GT to make it fit, and the latter would defeat the purpose of installing it to start with!

The F8 is rumored to have the HD 2600, which is not as good as the HD 2600XT or the 8600mGT, but it should be at least as good as the 8400mGT and the 8600mGS.

Better than what? The IFT00(anyone else think it's feels wrong to have 00 in a final model name..?) is suppose to have 8600GT, no? Are there any facts on the HD2600's performance? 3DMark scores etc.?

EDIT: Jaymz, what 14" Asus notebook with 8600GT are you talking in your sig? Or are you just dreaming..? :p

Everything I have found indicates that the IFT00 will have a 8400M GS which I don't believe will be comparable to the performance of the HD2600. I am being very subjective I guess :D

Ohh, I see. Initial info said that the IFT00 & the Zepto 6224W were the only 2 14" notebooks with 8600GT but I guess that 6224W(and the white 6324W) is now the only one and it's available in about a week! yay!

God... This graphic card stuff used to be soooo simple. Atleast for notebooks. Last generation we had the:
go7300, go7400 and go7600 and ATI had the x1300, x1400 and x1600. There was a clear differance easy to understand.
Then there was a small update with the go7700 and x1450 and x1700.

only the high end card like the 7900 gs and 7900gts where more complicated with the lettering after.

Now it is all like G GS GT, XT no XT (is the HD2600 without xt just called that?) I cant wait for a 8300M and 8700M to come out in 3-4 different versions.

Joshua if you look at the link (xoticpc.com) I put in the list, you'll see that the IFT00 will have 256Mb at 128bit which means.. at least 8400 GT !!! ;)

There is a version of the IFT00 with the 8600mGT. However, it appears that Asus is not sending that version to the U.S. At most, we can hope for a 8400mGT or a 8600mGS.

I'm just curious. Why did dell choose to put a 8M series GPU in an ultraportbale. Won't that kill battery life?

Wouldn't it have been better if they designed another desktop replacement?

if you're a true nVidian then you shouldn't ask this dude ! :)

we (many of us) want a 13"-14" with 8400GT because we want a thin-n-light (not necessarily ultraportable) gaming tool which is at some extent - portable, and we're not looking for a desktop replacement at all, which will have at least a 8600GT with 512Mb or even a 8800 card. ;)

as for the battery, whoever wants this kind of tool is very aware of the battery drawback here and will buy a high capacity or even a 2nd battery, like I'll do ! :D

Yes it makes sense to have the 8400M G ofcource.

I really want to know more about the next SZ release with the new Santa Rosa platform. If it is any good for the money it will be my next laptop.

The SZ has the best of all worlds:
    - looks
    - mobility
    - battary life
    - power

Only it costs to much :(

    Jaymz,

I'm a thin and light laptop user, but weighing up all the aspects needed:

    Dual core 2.0Ghz
    13.1"-14" max @ 1440x900
    DX10 graphics (eg nVidia 8600GT 512)
    Santa rosa board
    100GB HD
    Multi format Burner (DVD/CD)
PC6400 memory up to 4 GB
    under 2.5 Kg
good customer support and real people on a phone.
    extended warranty.

The one I went for Zepto 6224 14" Znote, with all the above

I do 3D graphics for games and use photo shop, 3DMax, Maya and some heavy weight editors. This is the standard in a 14" package
