Yes, 3Dmark05 is old, but it still can do a number on low-end fullsize notebooks of 2011. Take a look at my sisters' Dell Inspiron M5030

    Specs:
    1366x768 15" screen
    AMD P360 Dual-Core - 2GHz, 2 x 512Kb L2 Cache
    3GB DDR3-1333
    ATI Mobility Radeon 4250 - 256MB Dedicated and 32-bit
    320GB 5400rpm HDD
    DVD+RW
Test run at 1024x768, all settings default

    3Dmark05 Score: 3122
    GT1 - Return To Proxycon: 13.85 FPS
    GT2 - Firefly Forest: 9.23 FPS
    GT3 - Canyon Flight: 15.87 FPS

    CPU Score: 11178
CPU Test 1- Return to Proxycon: 7.49 FPS
CPU Test 2 - Canyon Flight: 7.81 FPS

I'm tempted to run 3Dmark06 and MAYBE Vantage. should I?

PS: the web-address has 2 different #'s since I used the free trial, wanted to show score and fps #'s side by side and thus had to open 2 separate windows.

yea, but the cpu in the xps is older in architecture. the core 2 duo in my sager in the cpu tests gets 9 to 10 fps by itself.

3Dmark05 is not a good test it too easily gets a bottleneck causing misleading results.

Tis True. As for the bottleneck, this is why I also am debating testing 3Dmark06 and vantage for the m5030 and comparing it to my current sager.

    3Dmark06: 10,370
    3Dmark Vantage: P4303.

I'll post details of them on request.

3DMark Vantage and 3DMark 11 are much more reliable and consistent tests than 3DMark05 or 06.

Futuremark keep the older versions up for older or lower end hardware.

It should not be surprising that a netbook class performance device is tested well by a 6-7 year old benchmark.

Using older benchmarks have a couple of benefits on older/lower end hardware:

    1. The scores have larger accuracy due to the larger gaps in points giving a finer performance scale.

    2. The older benchmarks are indicative of the likely older games probably run on these machines. You don't expect them to be running the new battlefield game for instance, but some neverwinter nights is probably more likely.

On newer stuff such as my incoming 8130, yes. Because we are beginning to get to the point that the CPU can run the CPU tests at 25 to 30 fps and are skewing scores in 3Dmark05, but realize the Dell I tested (a M5030) was loaded with a Radeon 4250 and an AMD P360.... not what we'd call gaming stuff.

Right, and I did this as a joke to the readers. In an era where we all want to have the biggest score and the most fps, I figured that at least this score is something we could laugh about. (And don't get me started on my college-bound sister's N5030, with a pentium T4500 and Intel GMA4500 graphics... which she spent $981 on cuz it came with a "free" xbox 360).

Would i run the new sager with 3dmark05, maybe... just to get a feel of what it does, but i'd put greater weight on 3dmark06, and particularly vantage. I may even run 3dmark06 and 3dmark vantage on the M5030 just to see what it does.

I've seen scores around the 100 mark. Now that's funny, the score above is just sad.

Apparently the m5030 is supposed to get about 200 in Vantage. I'll test and let ya know
