    Is my videocard cooked (see picture of boot-up screen)?

    My GPU is powered by the dreaded nVidia 8600M.

    Aargh! It's times like this I wish I had gone to bed.

    Looks like your dreaded 8600M is failing...

    Does it happen in BIOS?

    Try this if your notebook is out of the warranty period.

    Those "odd" visual artifacts occur during the entire booting up of the notebook -- the flash of the BIOS screen, booting of Windows, and desktop.

    Yep, your video card is dying. The 8600m is notorious for this. Go bake it and see if that helps, it seems to have a high success rate.
