I ordered a dell 9400 with wxga+ screen 1440x900. I play alot of games that dont have widescreen resolutions? Will i be able to use 1280x1024 or will i have to go down to 1024x768. Im getting it with a 7900gs so i want it highest res the screen can do. Also if i put it in a full screen resolution does it stretch it and cut of some of the picture or does it make its smaller nad but black bars on the edge to make it a full screen pic?

You won't be able to play 1280x1024 as that is a resolution greater than the pixels on the monitor. Both vertical and horizontal resolution have to be the same or under the monitors native resolution.

You can set the graphics card to maintain aspect ration when playing, so if you were playing at 1024x768 say, you could have it stretched out across the monitor, or you can have the game play at 1024x768, but maintaining the aspect ratio so the game plays in the centre of the screen. You will have black bars either side of the game.

The forum has a lot of info when it comes to widescreen play. You could also use Google. First result: www.widescreengamingforum.com.

Great site, has widescreen solution for almost every game.

    Charlie :)

It'll be in the driver control panel somewhere, I would imagine it would be anyway. ATI has that option in their control panel options, perhaps an Nvidia user can fill you in more.

I would recommend widescreen. You Do NOT want to be gaming in 1024x768. Visit widescreengaming, they will help you.

If you can't play in widescreen then 1024x768 is the best 4:3 ratio for you.

1152*864 is also an option when you have a 1440*900 screen, but that res isn't allowed with Need for speed games. For most games there are almost always some mods to play at widescreen ;)

I play a bunch of older games as well, and so far I have yet to come across a game that will refuse to play at native resolution on my laptop.
