    Hey guys,

I am looking at getting my first laptop after using PC's for the last (long time)... mostly for gaming (WoW) other general home use and some video editing

The only real decision left to make is about the screen... WLED Or CCFL

Now I know the difference, I know the theoretical benefits of WLED but I really just want to know what you guys think...

    Widescreen WXGA+ WLED (1440x900) OR
    Widescreen WUXGA+ CCFL (1920x1200) for £30.01 more

Also which would handle running at non native resolutions better?

Go 1920x1200... I'll take that resolution every time.

    how big is this screen?

my m1530 now has the option of 1920X1200 and I'm telling you right now on the m1710 my friend has... that res makes me go cross eyed. so having 1920X1200 on a 15 is just crazy.

I opted for a 1490X900 because I found 1280X800 is too large, i didn't even have the option for 1650X1050. But I am very happy with 1490X900. 720p looks great and if i want to watch a 1080p rip or blu ray movie i can just hook it up to my 24" monitor at 1920X1200.

    Good point. I'm using a 17" at that resolution. I can't imagine a 15" at it.

1680x1050 is a very good resolution for laptops imo.

    For a 15.4", it is perfect. 1440x900 is great for 14.1", 1280x800 is great for 13.3 & 12", and 1920x1200 is great for 17".

my 19" was 1440*900, and that was pretty crisp.

What is that $60? Go for it :D

Yeah $60... And I don't really want to use an extra monitor... both resolutions come in 15.1 and 17" so that's the next decision.. I think 1920x1200 for the 17" and the lesser for the 15.1 thanks for the advice...

It really depends on your preference. Some people love the bigger resolution, while others prefer smaller ones. Note that unlike a CRT or projection screen, the native resolution of your LCD will be the one it performs best at, so choose wisely ;).

Also take note that since the native resolution is the one which looks best on the LCD, you'd want to play games at that resolution as well. So note that higher resolutions can and will tax your GPU more. Jumping from 1680x1050 to 1900x1200 on a game will probably be a noticeable change in performance(and you'll probably have to lower other details/settings depending on which GPU you have).

If I had to pick, I'd go with 1440x900 since I personally don't need that high a resolution, especially not on a 15.4" or lower monitor lol :p If it's 17" though, get the higher resolution if you like that! ^^

well, speaking purely from a gaming standpoint, i would say go for the lower resolution with WLED, unless you are getting a laptop with enough graphics power to run games at such high resolutions well.

Yeah, you should let us know what laptop you're getting. If you've got the power for 1920x1200 I'd recommend it but 1440x900 is a lot less demanding.
