Whenever I choose a lower resolution than my native one in a game the actual in game screen gets smaller than my laptop's display (15,6"). If I choose 800x600 for instance, two black strips will appear on each side of the in-game screen instead of filling up the whole laptop display as it happens on my desktop.
Why is this? Is this normal for laptops? Is there a way to fill up my display with any resolution I choose?

The resolution you choose has to be the same aspect ratio as your display. If your display is 1920x1080, which is 16:9, then 800x600 won't work because that's 4:3 aspect ratio.

My display is 1366x768, so which lower resolutions can I choose so that the whole screen is filled up?

Any other 16:9 resolutions. 1280x720 is one.
