    Screen resolutions effect video output resolution?

    17" WSXGA+ (1680X1050) If you chose that specific screen on a notebook rather than the 17" WUXGA (1920X1200), would you still be able to use the DVI or HDMI port to watch (a movie [assuming the notebook has a Blu-Ray or HDDVD drive] or a game) in 1080p? I figure you would considering it's not being watched on the 17" screen. But I'd like to verify.

    Correct, the output resolution is determined by the link type and the graphics card, not your notebook's screen resolution.
