Recently I'm beginning to have some problem with the screen on the laptop in my sig. The most severe problem started happening yesterday when the screen just split into a 30/70 divide with the 30 portion on the left side but it is displaying the right portion of the picture. There would be lots of flickers horizontally. It happens after running games for a bit. If I reboot the system, everything goes back to normal. Temperatures are not high on the video card, ~85C when this happens. Only recent changes I've done is repaste the GPU. So is my GPU or screen giving me the issue?

if its anything like this below then your gpu is on its last legs. a screen shot sure would help if you can grab one.

I tried to replicate the issue, this time I got a full screen of vertical, alternating gray lines.
So basically my GPU is shot?
Update: just tried it again, instant full white screen....... -
6990m's are notorious for short lifespans best bet is to try and bake your card or get a 7970m as a replacement.
-
sadly that sounds cream crakered = knackered = dead.
as mentioned the baking method will resurect it. weve had reports of months and also years.
at work now but i will post the walktrough links later. -
OK thank you guys, I will try to bake it. One thing, I don experience problem under normal usage or watching movies, only when I put it under load. Could I have messed something up while doing the repasting? The temps don't seem ridiculous on the gpu core, but I don't know if the thermal pads on the memory are ok since I replaced the stock ones (the thickness of the pads are not exact match.

Edit: None of the resellers have 7970m instock, but they do have 8970m for the same price and it's suppose to be compatible with the P150HM. However, I gave the baking method a try and it revived my card. Now it even runs cooler than beforeI think I will save myself a couple hundred bucks for right now.

glad to hear the baking method worked for you godlyatheist.
this is what we like to see on here. another happy customer not having to buy a new gpu. -
If it breaks down again, should I just keep baking it until it's totally cooked? I guess this method is only temporary right?
-
yup. some members have done it 2-3 times as it only lasted a few months. others it has lasted 1-2 years without a rebake.
all it is doing is melting the solder contacts that have cracked. i guess the more its done it also melts the parts that wernt cracked. -
Sorry to necro this thread, but the card died again today. Died really fast, 1 time screen with vertical lines and no more. Baked it again for 4 minutes and it is back and running. Exactly 2 month since last reflow. I don't really game that much now but I need a working laptop. Do you guys think it's worth it to replace the card? I was able to get an offer on ebay for a 7970m for $350, is that a good deal? Any one had issue with the 7970m dying like the 6990m?
Screen reverse split with lines
