I came across this recently. Some modders went to work on creating more levels and eventually a mod for Portal was created. Portal Prelude was released in October which includes new challenges as well as a narrative. FYI, this is not the official prequel to Portal that Valve is working on. However, this mod is true to form and I imagine many will enjoy the challenge of 19 new test chambers. As far as I can tell, you need to have Portal (and Steam) installed to be able to run this - no other requirements.
From some reviews, it seems that PP has some rather difficult sections. There is a walkthrough posted on the main page of PP.

As always, give credit where due: to the PP team.

I just played through a few more levels up to chamber 11. So far, there's dialogue between the testers similar to Portal. Some new hazards were added. I had been stuck on chamber 2 before, but figured it out. Overall, the chambers were not too tough but still challenging. Chamber 9 was a pain though, by far the toughest yet. Also, it seems like there is a story that is finally being developed.

An update: I finished this mod and I would say it is a very good effort. It took me about 5 hours to complete, and I am usually slightly quicker than the average gamer. As stated, there are 19 chambers plus some ending objectives similar to Portal. I think the complaints about difficulty are exaggerated. I only had trouble with chambers 9 and 18. Otherwise, the rest are doable but of course challenging. The story-telling deals with the formation of glados the AI. Overall, I think anyone who enjoyed Portal should give this mod a try.
