Bought this game yesterday and it worked fine the first time, 3+ hours of playing with no problems at all. Turned on my PC today to have it crash every 3 rounds or so. Game just freezes, the music stops playing and can't do anything. CTL ALT DEL takes me out and I kill the game from task manager. Rinse, repeat and crashes again a few rounds later.

Verified the install with Steam, everything is there and seems fine. No idea what's going on and it's incredibly frustrating. Please help

That sounds strange, it first worked and then started giving problems the next day? Have you installed anything new in between or do you have anything suspicious running in your background?

And what's the specs of your computer? Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card.

No, I haven't installed anything new. I did a repair on the Visual Studio software and that seems to have fixed it in a way. It's still crashing, but less frequently. I'm running the game on medium settings using dx10.

    My specs are:

    8GB RAM
    i5 2.6 dual core
    Nvidia GT420m video card

Not the most amazing of systems, but it works alright...mostly.

first thing to do is check your cpu and gpu temps while playing...

They get up pretty high sometimes, occasionally hitting 98 on core 2, but the cut off for my processor is 105. I've always had this problem though, no clue what to do as it's a relatively newish PC (bought in december 2010). GPU temp stays at around 68.

hummm.... it might be the ''way'' you are playing the game:

    Are you in a campaign?
if so how far in a campaign are you?

Try to play some big battles for sometime, if there is a overheating issue, it will crash right there.

I'm at the beginning of a campaign. Armies are about 1000 troops aside. I've not tried multiplayer. It was crashing only on the campaign map, now that's fixed, it's crashing only in battles. Updating my drivers now to see if that fixes anything and I'm moving settings down to low.

Typical, updating my drivers has made matters worse. Game won't even load at all now.>(

cpu is probably peaking temperature near 105 and starts failing (probably not permanently, but maybe just starts returning incorrect values at high temperature). causes system instability and crashes the program. just a thought. 100C or close is too hot.

crashing in the campaign usually means, files are corrupted be it either the saves or whatever happened there.

Crashing in battles means there is, in your case, overheating issues, or drivers issue.

So yeah you are overheating, getting damn near close to T junction aint safe.

your cpu is reaching critical temps and is probably throttling. the temp or the throttling can both cause instability and both can cause carshes.

youre playing on a pc right? it shouldnt be that difficult to reapply thermal paste on your cpu.
also check your ambient temps. if its too hot, turn on the a/c a bit.
