I want to play games but my laptop aint ready yet.

I just bought a new laptop 3 days ago and everytime I turn it on something pops up and says "You have not created a backup copy of your factory state
Windows. We strongly recommend that you make it now. Prepare black DVD+Rs or DVD-Rs."
Should I back it up first without installing the latest Asus G53sx drivers and latest NVIDIA Drivers?

PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME. I use asus g53sx

Backing up is always a good idea, but not when stuff keeps popping out on every startup.

You'll probably need to disable this popup from one of the settings in your Asus software. As for me, I would have just uninstalled this Asus nonsense immediately, or even install Windows from scratch if it would become too bad.

Relax, dude. No need to alarm about every little niggle in your laptop :)
You bought your laptop to have fun with it, not to worry about it that much.

Anyway, your friend is right. It is much more efficient to back up as soon as possible, before more stuff gets installed, adding more to the backup size. Just back it up using the software you have, and if it still won't go away after you'll backup, uninstall the annoying thing altogether.

In your other thread you're asking about a G 73, here it's the G53. Do you have 2 machines or is it a typo?

Just curious - some of the drivers ought to work on either, but some may be different and could cause headaches for you, instability and such.

@amirfox ok, but im still confused lol, coz in your 2nd to the last comment you said that my friend is right its wise to back it up since it still has little data in it, but if I download the drivers and also the NVIDIA drivers before I back it up will it like, overload or something? I plan to put it in a DVD+R, 4.7 gb or something =)

@cylphis Im sorry my bad I just have a G53sx, my bad bro

Oh no problem, I just wanted to make sure you were getting the right drivers. :)

On the backup - if you ever need to restore the laptop to factory defaults (Have windows as it shipped from the factory) you either need this backup or you will need to pay asus $50 for a restore disc.

The backup takes a while, but it saves you some good coin. :)

Ok so which is recommended? Do I back it up first without downloading the latest drivers from asus and NVIDIA drivers from NVIDIA.com? Or should I download and install all drivers 1st before backing them up. I apologize for too many questions, As youve noticed, I dont know much about computers =)

Drivers are not games and software, they are needed for your computer to work properly. So yes, download and install the drivers from nVIDIA first.

Before you backup, make sure all the drivers are in place and everything is working properly.

The whole reason to back up is to revert back to working condition if something happens.

No apologies needed - it's how we learn.

The easiest way - just run the backup and put the discs away in a safe place.

After that follow the bloatware guide here.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/380681-asus-utility-bloatware-guide.html

Most bloatware (software that isn't really useful) is installed by manufacturers to try to make their product more attractive and isn't really needed for the most part.

After that, you can determine if you need to update drivers.

A decent rule of thumb here is "If it ain't broke don't fix it."

In other words, if your laptop is showing signs of instability, it's usually going to be caused by buggy drivers. If it runs fast and smooth though, driver updates won't always be necessary.

That said, the video card drivers often have bug fixes or performance enhancements for certain games. BF3 is a good example. It may run lousy on the older drivers your laptop shipped with - updating them can give you a much better experience if the newer drivers aren't buggy.

Personally - I try to find the driver that's most stable across several games and stick with it.

Hope this all helps a bit.

EDIT: amirfoox beat my reply :)

The before or after - it's preference in my opinion, not to worry - a backup with or without updates won't break anything.

Hey guys so I recently finished downloading the Asus drivers now do I extract and install it in the DOWNLOADS folder? Or do I have to transfer it to some specific folder or drive? If yes, please specify please

    few questions
did you get a original windows operating disc when you got your laptop
also did you get a drivers disc
i have to ask this as i have no idea how asus work and what they supply.
also what nvidia graphics card have you got installed.

reason i ask this is a lot of laptops like clevo you have to load the drivers in a certain order.

did you buy this computer from a shop as normaly these laptops are ready to go so the only one really needs updating is nvidia.

if you do go ahead and load all the drivers normally they are saved in your download folder.
all you have to do is click on the shortcut and it will start loading. you dont have to specify where it goes as it loads into the correct place and makes a new folder for it. you might have to reboot quite a few times for each driver to finish loading. then go back to your download folder and load the next one.
word of warning though: i would avoid loading anything to do with the bios as if you dont know what your doing it can totally feck everything up. if its a new laptop then it should already have the latest bios loaded at the factory.

due to forum rules try not to double post about the same thing.
use one or other thread and mods can merge them http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...sus-live-update-removed-my-graphics-card.html

i just asked questions above which you had already posted in another thread on this same board.
if you had said you had received discs with your lappy it would of saved me asking it again.

now let me read your other thread first.

best place to get nvidia drivers which gives you the last 10 to chose http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

    ill continue on this thread:

ok, are you connected to the internet yet? if so are you running an antivirus software.
reason im asking this is try going to you tube and playing any old video. can you hear sound. if you can then your audio drivers are already installed so im guessing most if not all the others are as well. its only the nvidia driver you need to update on a regular basis.

you can get a list of the last 10 or so nvidia drivers from > NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Advanced Search

make sure you change the drop down boxes to your spec ie.
    product type = GeForce
product series = the graphics card you have (make sure its notebook)
product = the graphics card number
    operating system = 64bit
    recommendations = all

as you are new to all this i would only chose WHQL drivers and not BETA

click on the latest whql at the top of list and download it.
open your download folder and drag the driver to your desktop so you can easily get to it.
double click on it and it will start to load.

    Same here. :)

mikezzz2012 - for the sake of simplicity, only because it sounds like you're very nervous about possibly breaking something, which is unlikely, I would refer back to what I posted earlier - If it isn't broken, don't fix it. You'll have plenty of time to learn about drivers, bios and configurations later on. This is my humble opinion only. :)

What I would do if I were in your shoes.

    1. Fire up the laptop and do the backup - get that done and out of the way.

    2. Remove the bloatware following the excellent guide here.

    3. Install the games and apps you want to use.

    4. Normal usage - this is where you will really begin to learn what's what without getting confused.

Example - lets say you want to play BF3. You jump in game, but it stutters or crashes. BF3 had some issues with nvidia drivers for the graphics chip, so a quick search here, or in google - would point you in the right direction as far as finding the best driver for BF3.

Example - Videos on youtube or flash based apps crashing or hard locking - disable hardware acceleration -

Example - typing seems odd, missed keystrokes etc - update bios and ATK packages -

You'll also find out if there's any kind of hardware problems. software can always be fixed, even if you have to go to the extreme and reinstall windows.

Start out slow with the simplest course of action - if you get stuck or run into a glitch - ask. :)

    ^ agree with Cylphid

but please download an antivirus program NOW or you will be back on here with many more problems like a virus soon enough.

you have a choice of antivirus which are free or you can upgrade for the pro version which has a lot more protection.
i use avast internet security at the moment which has been good but others advise on microsoft security essentials.

please download one of these now and load it before you do anything else.

Avast > avast! Free Antivirus | Download Antivirus Protection Software

MSE > Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

AVG > AVG Free | Antivirus | Free Virus Protection

only load ONE of these. also make sure you have windows firewall switched on as these free AV dont have firewalls.

turn windows firewall on > start > control panel > windows fire wall (make sure its green and not red) if its red it needs turning on NOW

I closed your other thread so it will redirect any future inquiries here.

    Now to answer this:
Basically, Asus stops updating the download page for specific laptop model once their successor is launched or shortly after. They do update the individual download pages for each software they make though. That is why i linked to the ATK package download page. I'm currently running the latest version of ATK on both of my Asus laptops without any problem and one of those is from 2009. The only exception to that would be power4gear for which i'd get the latest version on the laptop's download page.

Next time, keep your questions to one or two threads, there is nothing preventing you from directing the thread to another question after the first one has been answered or asking multiple questions in the same thread. Mods can also move a thread to another section if you desire it.

Hi again guys. I downloaded Avast free trial version for now and I tried to back up my laptop today without installing the new drivers, but it said its estimated that I need 6 DVD writable cd's, I only have one for now. Is it okay if I just save the back up in an external hard drive which still has 200gb free memory?

    yup that should be fine.
6 dvd's is the normal for a brand new backup. you might need to burn them to dvd at some stage if you ever need to use them as you will be booting from disc after a system failure. im not sure if you can boot from usb external drive after a failure.

also have you got windows firewall switched on. if so you are well protected now even if its the free av

if you need monitoring software you can find loads in my signature below.

now go and enjoy your new toy and you know where we are if you ever need more advice.

Thanks for replying guys Ireally appreciate it. Yeah you guys are right, I am scared something might go wrong coz this is my first laptop,Im sorry about that. Anyway, since Mr DJ said that "im not sure if you can boot from usb external drive after a failure.", Ive decided to wait for tomorrow to buy 5 more DVDr for backing up. Any way since I'l be doing that tomorrow, Ive decided that I'l update the Asus Drivers (which Ive already downloaded bu not yet intalled) and also the NVIDIAdriver (also downloaded but not installed), is that okay for now? and sorry about the double post again

Hello guys I need your help again. So right now, while backing up, I noticed that only one of the two airvents/Heat exhaust(whatever you call that 2 wholes at the back of the laptop, not under ok, that emit heat) actually works.I can only feel the left side blowing out heat, and Im not even playing games or anything, just backing up right now. Is this normal?or should both work?

Hey guys I recently changed my antivirus from Avast to Kaspersky 2012, and I inserted an external hardrive but Maleware was detected, I was asked If I should QUARANTINE (recommended) OR DELETE FILE, which is better? If its quarrantined is it still there or should I completely delete it?

    hi mike
did you remove avast first as its bad news having 2 loaded even if only one is running.
have you got much stuff that you need to keep on the external hard drive. if not a reformat might be worth it just to fully clean it up.

if its in quarantine then it wont spread anymore. what is the name of the malware. if you know what it is and its not important then you can delete it but either post the name here or google it first.

so how are you liking the laptop so far?

Hi MrDj! Yes I uninstalled first the free avast version then I installed Kaspersky 2012. Actually it says here that its a "Detected threat"-
type :eek:ther maleware - "UDS :DangerousObjectMultiGeneric", and it says

Object:f:\saundersnclex\programs\xml\questions = Thats my Question and answer reviewer I installed in my external hard drive. I had it quarantined and after that I scanned the entire Hardrive and it showed there were no more threats. Is this okay now or should I do anything else?
