Should I be able to run FC3: Blood Dragon with these specs?

    Intel Core i7-3610QM @ 2.3 ghz

    16gb RAM

    NVidia 680M

    2x 128gb SSD

Those are my basic specs. Now... I can't run FC3: BD at even the lowest settings. At 1920x1080 resolution I get around 10 fps, even with every graphics option set at the lowest possible setting. Is this to be expected, or is there some sort of problem I should be looking into? This is mildly disturbing because I purchased this laptop less than a year ago expecting to play the latest games at decent settings. I'm not even expecting the highest settings... I just want to be able to play new games decently.

    Thanks in advance!

NOTE: THIS IS NOT SOME OPTIMUS THING. FC3: BD is NOT running off the integrated graphics. Please do not offer that as a solution.

Well, if you are convinced it's not using the integrated graphics, then you have some other hardware/driver issue with the 680. Of course you can run the game, you can run any game with that rig just fine.

Now, as a comparison, I played Blood Dragon initially on the integrated and was getting around 10-13 fps, as it defaulted to Intel being a new game. Once I switched over to my 660, performance is right in line with FC3, which is high settings, 1600x900 @ 40+ fps. Something is amuck with your rig if you are absolutely certain it's not just using the IGP.

Good luck! I'm playing as listed above on the G46 in my signature.

Yep, either you are in fact using integrated, or the gpu is stuck at power saver clocks... it will run it way faster. Curious, are you running on battery by chance? That KILLS my performance with the 660.

    Off Topic @ xKronicL, it's an '08 Concours 1400GTR, love it :D

Have you confirmed the GPU used while gaming, as well as the clocks of your 680m while gaming? You basically have nearly the top of the line possible for notebook GPUs, it's impossible for you to not being able to run any game right now, even at the lowest settings...

I suggest GPU-Z, load up a game, make sure that it is in fact using the nvidia card. If it is somehow using the 680, check your clocks with afterburner, like be77 said, make sure you are plugged in, that will make your game slower than a fat kid swimming in a tub of maple syrup... If everything seems normal, send that laptop back to where it came from and have a not so kind chit chat with customer service so you can get back to gaming!!!

Sometimes I say things like this, and then I realize I was wrong, and that's okay. We all make mistakes. Your system with a 680m is running Far Cry 3 at roughly the same FPS and settings as the iGPU could handle. It's possible that your system is overheating and throttling performance, or that it's running at severely-reduced GPU clocks because of power-saving modes or insufficient power (bad AC adapter? gaming on battery?). Maybe your GPU drivers are from 1996 or the game is poorly-optimized. Maybe your computer is overloaded with other tasks in the background while you're playing. While these are all possible answers, it's more likely that it is not, in fact, using the 680m.

Why be "not so kind" when you could be reasonable with the customer service rep (who has no responsibility for the current state of your laptop) for the same outcome? Be a jerk, everybody walks away mad - what's the benefit of that?

are you set to high performance.

easiest test. download 3dmark or 3dmark11 from sig below and run the benchmarks and compare to others with your same spec. if theres over 1000 score difference then you have knakered hardware. if its a few hundred then all is ok and time to look elsewhere.

I'm not saying be mean to them, but from past experiences as long as I am fairly stern while talking to customer service, things usually end up ok.

I have 3630Qm @2.4GHz, 660M (stock), 8gb 1666 i manage to run FC3 with almost the highest settings with 55fps avg. but when i start Blood Dragon i get some nasty fps drop which dont comes any higher than 30fps even all on lowest setting @Dx9... which is pretty strange, since there is no actual graphic improvement in the game except some post fx modding. I updated my driver but it doesnt fixes it, there is some beta driver that seems to boost the fps in Blood Dragon, but i dont dare install beta drivers, since one of those fried my desktop graphic chip....

Hmm, runs well this way, similar to FC3. Original poster is talking 10 fps, that's a world away from occasional lag or 30+.

Fun game, not to be taken serious for sure ha

I cracked up during the tutorial when the guy was complaining, not my type of game though, it's too intense.... if that makes sense.... anyway that's off topic. Yeah 10fps is just not making sense with your specs

That should definitely play at decent settings. Yeah, something wrong. Probably driver related. I remember when I once was trying to update the driver and so tried to uninstall the old driver, which upon uninstallation promptly installed an even older driver version without my permission or knowledge. When I installed the latest driver over that things got messy. Somehow, both drivers had been installed at the same time and I was getting abysmal performance in games which I had been able to play fine on my system before. Required me to completely wipe all drivers off my laptop and get driversweeper on the case. Hope you get it sorted!

Make sure you are on high performance as mentioned before (Battery Settings). Also please use a charger, as this might explain it all.

Reinstall the game, make sure you've got the latest nVIDIA driver. Reinstall the game. Reinstall the GPU drivers. If you can, format the computer (at the utter worst case scenario).

Or just throw your PC out the window :D (ok dont do that). Good luck :)
