Hello;
I've never played starcraft 1, or even any World of warcraft, not even once.
So should I buy starcraft 2 anyways? I've never played RTS games, but I want a new game to play. Is it easy to learn how to play if i've never played a game like it before?
I mostly play fps games, as well as strategy, sim city etc.
Im considering buying it today, or not getting it at all. I just don't know if it is for me.
I've read an article about it for new players, and it seems complicated, but I'm sure I'll learn.
Anyways, anyone think I should get it?
Thanks!

It's somewhat complex, but it can be a lot of fun. And once you're actually playing it the complexity is a lot easier to deal with. If you like the strategy like Sim City or Civilization and want it with a bit more action, StarCraft is one of the best RTSs out there.
I'm not sure if there's a demo or anything available, but if there is, I'd highly recommend finding one of those first. -

No demo of Starcraft II, but he could easily pick up one of the prior games super cheap that will give him a very good feel for the game.
Warcraft 3 or Starcraft can be had cheap.
Can even go for the battle chest.
Considering the high cost of SC2 I would get SC1 first to both try the waters and also get up to par on the lore/story before going into SC2 -
Yes, definitely. The beta obviously wasn't without its flaws but it's the best RTS I have played so far.
Sorry to thread jack -
If you have never played a game like this before then yes it will be a bit difficult starting out if you go straight to the ladder because most people who play that will have a good amount of experience in starcraft/warcraft and have little patience for 'noobs'. However, you will be just fine in the campaign because if its anything like the first one then it will ease you in and start out real basic. Also, the best thing about starcraft (at least in my opinion) is that it has the option to play and make custom games. Their map editor for this one looks so advanced that the possibilities are really endless. I've already seen some first and third person shooters.
In short, yes you should buy SC2. -

Don't get SC2 if you don't think you can standing losing almost every online game you play for the first month.
-
Coming from SC2 CE owner. Bnet sucks. No chat and such. You have to login everytime unless you want to play "guest". Dumb move blizz. Thats where they can keep track of your records but you lose privacy. I only played the first mission as of now.
-
-
If you've never played an RTS, you'll probably want something a bit easier to get into. I recommend the original Dawn of War, or maybe Company of Heroes.
-
-
But to be frank do we have central chat rooms for games like MW2? Or any other FPS out there? This game is not "Starcraft" its starcraft 2, things evolve, change what have you, playing this and expecting things to be 100% the same as SC1 is just naive.
They didnt make these changes to "control" the market or whatever crazy conspiracy theory you may think. I love how on one hand people are screaming "to much of my info is out there" then on the other hand they are complaining that you cant see the creator of a custom game...
Imagine if this game had a massive chat room like the trade channels on every WoW server. It would be horrible. Language filters or not unmoderated access leads to people being arseholes. -
-
I plan on getting it, but not until my laptop arrives on august 3rd. I was in the beta, and it was quite a bit of fun, but it ran poorly on the comp I'm on now. I have a preorder for it, but I dont think I'll buy it until I actually get my laptop.

All new copies of SC2 should come with 2 trial passes for friends to play SC2 on their systems for 14 days. You should ask around for one as I'm sure fellow board members here wouldn't mind sharing them.
-
It's 14 days, or 7 hours. For most people on this forum, 7 hours will be gone in 3 minutes.
And only retail box copies come with the passes. -

it's sick....get it.....

If you want to wait a while, I'll probably be writing up a review of the single-player, keeping in mind players new to the genre and/or Starcraft universe.
I think if you want to get a taste of the genre without paying $60, the original Starcraft might be a good place to start, as it's still often hailed as the "best RTS" yet made, but it does have a bit of a steep learning curve if you're not quick with a mouse and smart with your resources. I'd probably instead recommend Dawn of War (the first series - Dark Crusade has the best campaign by far out of all of them) if you want to ease yourself into the genre without as much intense micromanagement and resource management. -
I like the single player campaign and such. I thought it was a good buy, but not worth a 8-10 year wait lol.
-
Buy it! For sure its awesome! Don't care THAT much about single player, but online is great.

Why not download the SC2 BETA and use the "you know" for investigative purposes.
I dont think thats illegal now according for DCMA. -
Find a friend to give you a guest pass?
-
If you have played games like Command and Conquer, you should be fine. I am really looking forward to purchasing Starcraft 2... once my Envy14 is delivered. But yeah... Those Koreans are insane online... I loaded up Starcraft 1 a few months ago and just got destroyed and I used to be really good at it...

FOr Multiplayer why not just play against your own level like Copper???
Then if you beat most coppers go to silver. -
try to play sc1 or other rts games too get a feel of rts. if you like it buy sc2 =], i think you would like it cause you like strategy
-
if u know someone that bought sc2 ask them for a guest pass so u can try it out.
id recommend playing the ai for a little while til u know ur units, then move to pvp online play.
good luck -
Im thinking of getting it tomorrow because i want to play the campaign really badly. I will wait on the online though until they implement chat channels and a better custom game system, because it really blows right now. But by then the game will be cheaper?

The Ghetto Battle.net 2.0: The Antithesis of Consumer Confidence
And no, you shouldn't BUY starcraft 2, because then you will be voting with your money and telling Activision-Blizzard that what they are doing to screw gamers are right. -
This pretty much sums up bnet 2.0

I think it has fully customizable games, and also doesnt it have tournament features?
LAN is gone, and that was due to massive pirating on the old game, though im sure where there is a will there will be a way even without LAN in this version.
But I personally think LAN is not as big of a necessity as it used to be, because internet is getting more wide spread and more bandwidth almost daily. I could easily host a whole LAN party via BNET with my home connection that cost $30 a month.
Not everybody has that ability but back in the day that would be unthinkable when LAN was a major feature and necessity. -
lol ^^ a stone does have tournament features and fully customizable games. there wouldnt be chess without stone.

Well LAN is not too much of an issue to me since I'll be playing most on bnet anyway. The thing that annoys me the most is how they screwed up everything that was good about Bnet 1.0
No chat channels, really?
No way to change your username...
Custom games list is terrible since everything is based on popularity
Regardless I'm still probably going to get the game because there is a good chance all of this will be patched due to the outrage on the beta forums and the sc2 forums over on bnet. -
If I were you, I would wait to see if they actually do change any of it before throwing money at it. Activision/Blizzard doesn't exactly have the greatest track record when it comes to listening to its community...just look at MW2. The IWNet non-dedicated server system has caused nothing but annoyance and rage since day 1, but the only thing we've heard from them since release has been "BUY MAP PACKS".
-
I bet they are gonna come with the obviously "smart" idea of charging for name changes.
-
Do I need an internet connection to play Starcraft II single player? Do I have to login to Battle.net to play single player??
-

once. the first time to initialize SC2.
then you can just play it offline (log in as guest) -

That is some insane emo nerd rage right there, wow...... -

Ie. more of an activision idea and deployment than blizzard action.
Remember blizzard just makes the games(and they do that well) it's the activision higher ups that push them into doing to make money.
The Ghetto Battle.net 2.0: The Antithesis of Consumer Confidence
That's a good read.
All that said, I bought the CE and I love it 100%! -
I have never played any of the SC games but was wondering if the gameplay is anything like the warhammer DOW series of rts.

I've played Starcraft off and on for the last 10 years, never highly competitive, but enough to know the game and its feel. When I walked in Wal-Mart and saw SC 2 was coming out in a week, I was like, "Holy ! It's already almost here!" I'm 98% decided on going out and picking up a copy Friday when I get paid. I'd be playing it on this laptop:
Asus G51VX-X3A
Core 2 Duo 2.53 Ghz
Geforce 260M
4GB RAM
Naturally, I'd assume it'll run SC2 perfectly, as it had no issues with Crysis Warhead. However, I've been having technical issues with my laptop, namely lag and jerking in games, and I'm trying to narrow down whether it's a software issue or hardware malfunction. I just don't want to put out for SC2 and then find out my laptop won't function.
Listening to all the Bnet issues, I'd say just like the above person did, that Blizzard will listen to the outrage and fix it in a patch. I don't believe in getting things fixed by not buying the game. I've played several MMO's, including WoW from Blizzard, and my first response to issues is to communicate with the development team. -
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
-
is starcraft 2 a bit like supream commander? Do you need to pay monthly like you do for world of warcraft. what is the difference between degital copy and retail??
-
2- No
3- Digital copy, it's when you fully download the game via internet. The retail copy is just the disk copy. Also, you can use your retail copy's cd-key and download the digital version...
Should I buy starcraft 2
