I mean, the games I want comes out for both. I've always been a fan of the playstation line, but I hear better things about the 360.

Like, both have wireless controlers, but the 360 work wherever, where as the PS3 needs to be programmed each time moved to a system.

Both can browse the net and download, but the 360 actullly does a good job.

and the list keeps goin on where the 360 looks much better then the PS3.

Well this is a thread for debate.

I'll always loved the Xbox line, especially Xbox Live. Xbox Live is just so good and well developed over the years compared to the infancy of the PS3's online service.

    Where do you live ?
If you live in the locations where the limited (European) version of the PS3 is being released (the have poor backward compatibility for PS1/2) then you should surely go for the PS3 but if you are going to get your hands on a normal PS3 it's better to go with PS3 (IMHO).

    Do you play online?
    360 > PS3
Do you care about the size?
    360 > PS3
Do you care about the looks?
    ... > ...
    Which exclusives do you prefer?
    ... > ...

They'll both get the usual multiplatform titles from EA, Activision et al, so its a case of say Halo or MGS, PGR or GT. At least they're both getting GTA4 :p

I would say the Xbox 360 as I own one and it has been great.

    Xbox Live is even better!

From a cost/benefit perspective, the 360 is a vastly better deal. More games, equal performance in games, far far cheaper.

So far, the 360 has sold much better than the PS3 (and its 1 year head start helps it even more), so in the long term, the 360 may be a better option as well. (Developers will, everything else being equal, prefer to develop for the console where they can sell the most copies. At the moment, that's the 360, and that doesn't seem like it's going to change anytime soon, if ever)

I can see two reasons to get the PS3.
1: You desperately want one of the (few) PS3 exclusive games that are coming out.
2: You want to be able to watch HD movies, and you believe Blu-Ray will end up beating HD-DVD in the market. ( And you're sure enough about this to be willing to fork out for early access to a Blu-Ray drive)

    I wouldn't consider getting a PS3 for $600...ever. Too much.

The 360 is much more fairly priced at $400. More games, and more fun if you ask me.

PS3 is just like any other Sony system... its going to break until they remake it 2 years down the road. I personally wouldn't buy a PS3 for $600, its just to much money, the 360 will probably have funner games in the end too, and probably cost less cause the PS3 uses Blueray..

Well, I want to play the new GTA, which comes out for both systems.

I think any new driver games will come out for both. Their is racing and so on for both, and I like ATV offroad games, which I think come out for both, and the sims. So I might look into getting the 360.

When you consider all the hidden costs of the 360 it isnt that cheap. The wireless bridge and the yearly xbox live subscription quickly makes the xbox expensive.

As for concerns that the ps3 will break, it might, but then your no better off with the 360 which is hardly completely reliable.

Oh and if your into driving games remember gran turismo will be a sony exclusive.

The games for the ps3 arnt great at the moment IMHO but then neither where the 360's when it was released. So if your wanting a console right now i would be tempted by the 360 but if you can wait for better titles to be released and the full potential of the ps3 to be unlocked I would get the sony in 6 months or so.

You should have an option of neither of them in ur poll... I would actually wait for 6 months like famous_grouse as the PS3 is still not settled yet. I see very weak launches in Europe, even in Ebay the price was somewat low compared to the insanity of the Wii and X360 when it was launch. I would say PS3 could be the next big Sony failure due to it's godlike price. But maybe in 6 months time the heads in Sony Japan would be awaken by the satistic of "What!? We still have 5million PS3 in stock!" and would by then cut the price down to make it competitive. Multimedia machine is good, but i think PS3 should have stick to games rather than multimedia, it's not like i m gonna use it to play my music and such...

P/S: I m really not flaming PS3 or such, i m just not satisfied with the selling price of the PS3...I want one but i m too poor to afford one, tat's wat we get for being poor.

Edit: BTW, if u really have the urge to get either of the console, wait for the Black Xbox360 Elite.

Our family is getting a PS3. Mum and Dad want a spare computer to browse the web/check emails on, and the kids want to have a better gaming machine. Might even upgrade the PS3 down the line with a TV Tuner or something.

Plus, I'm waiting for the Killzone game.

I would never buy a ps3, its too expensive. However, I wouldnt buy the 360 either because I stopped playing video games a few years ago. The only game I play is condition zero and I only play that occasionally.

I would go with the 360.

I don't have much experience with either system, but from my standpoint the 360 just seems to be a better deal all around. Despite the fact that you have to pay for the live service, it has had more time to be developed and refined. The fact that you can also link the 360 with your computer through the windows media center in vista to play movies and listen to music also makes it more appealing to me.

I also have a friend who has a PS3, but from what he has been telling me, it doesnt seem that much different from a 360, apart from the fact that it cost him $200 more.

The "sixaxis" motion sensing on the PS3 is also not that great, all it can do is sense the direction that the controller is going in, nothing more. If you're thinking about buying it because of that, you might as well get a Wii for $300 less. Not to mention that the wii's sensing is far more advanced and can point to things on the screen.

Yes if you do buy a 360 with HD-dvd attachment and wireless bridge and what not you come about even price wise to the PS3.. But if you're buying it for the games only the system is indeed $200 less. The games will just keep getting better for the 360 and Xbox Live is great, and more arcade games will keep coming out to offer more casual games to people.

Keep in mind that Microsoft is releasing a revised version of the Xbox 360 later in the year (not sure when). It's all black, features a 120GB hard drive, and an HDMI port, and will only cost $480. That's a hard drive twice as big as the PS3, and HDMI, for still over $100 less. At least, this is what my last issue of Game Informer tells me.

On top of that, Xbox Live is truly awesome. And even when you consider the current cost of the two systems, the PS3 does come out ahead with some features (60GB hard drive, wireless, HDMI, etc), but keep in mind that the 360 comes with component cables ($50 for the PS3) and a headset ($30 for the PS3), so there's added cost to each system. It really is a wash, and when it comes down to it, it depends on what system you want; will it be Halo 3 or MGS4, Forza 2 or GT5? It really just depends. I got a 360 cause the PS3 just doesn't make sense right now, but I would love to have one. I'd love to be able to run Linux on it, but the only supported Linux distro costs money as well, and I'm not a fan of that. I also prefer GT to Forza, and MGS to Halo, but I still just couldn't see getting a PS3 for those two games. $0.02

Really? Got some numbers for that?

Here, at least, you can buy:
    - 1 Xbox 360
    - 1 extra 360 controller
    - 2 360 games
    - 1 year's XBLive
    - 1 HD-DVD drive
    - 1 Wii
    - 1 extra Wii controller
    - 2 extra Wii games

for the same price as a PS3 with 3 games and an extra controller.
Of course the price varies a lot depending on where you live, but I'm having a hard time seeing how the 360 could ever become *more* expensive.

Which better titles are these? And what full potential is it? So far, everything we've seen has been graphics identical to the 360 ports. And virtually no PS3 exclusives make the question of "better PS3 titles" sound a bit hollow.

I'm no fan of any, since I prefer computer gaming over console gaming (it's the controller vs. keyboard issue). Anyhow, I think the arguments presented here so far are all valid.

But I also want to add a few more things that I think you should consider (unfortunately they seem to favor PS3):

    (1) xbox live account hijack/hacker problem
This problem seems huge enough to me, I remember how frustrating it was when I played Halo online at my friends place. That also reminds me of the frustration when playing Counter Strike with somebody cheating and is your opponent.

    (2) There's a report on engadget.com that says PS3 sold much faster than xbox 360 in the same time span, in the U.S.

    (3) Cell processor seems very fast, reported to be playing a big role in the folding@home project. How does this matter? Well, if the processor is pretty good, maybe the next revision of PlayStation won't be for years away. Which is a good thing, no?

    Just my 2 cents.

    1) The problem of Xbox Live account hacking actually isn't a problem, read here:

    Pre-Texting

    2) PS3 selling faster means nothing when someone is considering buying a system, that statistic doesn't really apply. Remember that many people purchased PS3s and sold them for remarkably higher price...

    3) The Cell Processor, I read, is actually on Par with the 360 core, though it is slightly more powerful. The Cell is made up of 1 main processor and 7 spus. These spus are very limited processors, and are not nearly as powerful as the main processor, and are limited to only a select few tasks. On the other hand, the 360s processor consists of 3 cores capable of running 2 threads each, resulting in 6 unrestricted threads. The 360s core is much more conventional so it is easier to program for than the PS3s, although in the long run you can squeeze a bit more juice outta the PS3s. It really won't make a big impact at all in games, so it really isn't a big role. It was overhyped IMO.

The biggest argument I see in this thread is that most people complain about the PS3 price. If you put that aside and actually look at what both those consoles offer, that is the better way to decide. The XBox360 has the advantage now because it has almost a year and a half on the PS3, so it has had time to refine its online service and had a selection of games come out for it. So if you are very interested in the games and services that are out now, then the XBox360 is the way to go for you. However, if you are aware of the titles coming down the road for the PS3 or like the newer hardware, go for that.

Many people seem to think that the PS3 will tank and go under like the Dreamcast did. Guys, Sony is NOT like Sega...they are a multi-billion dollar company and will continue to push their console regardless of how it does. It will NEVER cease to have software for it, you may just have a larger amount of crap titles to go along with the good ones.

It's still early for Sony. Once they ramp up they're developers, they will eventually meet the number of games the XBox360 has. It'll be up to you to decide on which ones coming out for that system you'll want to play. Honestly, you won't really "lose" either way.

I debated over waiting for the newer XBox360 or get the PS3. I chose the PS3 more to futureproof myself, I liked the better hardware and features, I liked the Blu-Ray, and I trust there will be great titles down the road. The price doesn't bother me, because I didn't want to let $200 be the deciding factor. I think you can't lose with either console, so go with your gut.

    Jalf,

Im sure I have told you this before but here it goes again.

    xbox 360@ £280
    wireless bridge@£50
    1 year xbox live subscription@ £40
So that means its costing £50 for the blu ray drive in which, in my opinion is a bit of a bargain, and it only takes one year to recoup the cost of the ps3 due to the xbox live membership.
(HD dvd drive@ £130) If you include the 360 hd dvd drive it makes the ps3 look almost cheap!

(Ps3@£425 including all of the above.)

PS the xbox 360 is also extremely loud.

    Yup I agree

Well maybe he feels good because he started to use computer during the 486 age. I did too and i m proud that i can use DOS command thou is really outdated, seldom you find ppl who knows tat(well just ask everyone who posted at What notebook should i Buy forum, i guess about 70% of the answers is NO) .

Back to topic, nothing is futureproof... Yes i do wish everything last forever but for the PS3, it's getting outdated day by day. In terms of GPU, the 8800 beats the crap out of the RSX and i wont be suprise tat the PS3 gets bottleneck by the GPU same goes for Xbox... And statistic shows tat if the games arent going multiplatform, they tend to lose money. I m betting my money on most games going multi and it's coming to the PC. The best gaming platform, the PC.... For party fun, go for the Wii...

Alright, but a mediocre online service that is free is not better than a great one that costs money. I'm sure people that buy the 360 are thinking "Alright, it's cheaper than the PS3, has better games out right now and a good online service, and I have the option of getting all these extra peripherals if I need them".

PS3 owner is thinking "Well it is expensive, but it comes with a blu ray player, and.. alright games (for the time being) and a stinky online service... but it comes with a load of features I absolutely need so I'll pay the premium for it".

I think the 360 really gives you the option of purchasing all these extra things that you probably don't need. Wireless bridge for example? Save some dough and just get a cable. HD-DVD player? Well I don't have an HDTV yet/ I don't really need to watch expensive HD movies just yet.

Honestly the game lineup for both systems looks strong for this year. You get MGS4, Heavenly Sword, etc. for the PS3 and bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3, etc. for the Xbox 360.

As you can tell, I am a 360 owner but I'm not completely biased.

But if you think about the PS3 in relation to sony, you're basically stealing from them. Sony loses a bunch of money off each PS3 they sell, while microsoft makes money (like they need it) off each 360 they sell. So you COULD think the PS3 is a good deal.

One thing I think that will hold the PS3 back in the future is its Blu-Ray drive. WTF?!!?! R U SERIOUZ? It's drive speed is very slow in comparison to standard DVD drives. In a world where loading is trying to be reduced to the tiniest amounts / streaming is becoming the norm, a slow drive speed will reduce the amount of data that can be pulled of the disc at a time. The upside to this is that each disc can fit up to 30+gb of data.

    Now think about this:
Oblivion was a humongous game, was it not? It looked great, there was stunning scenery, and that game can be played for 110+ hours (I will testify). Now how much space does this fun and addicting game take up? 6gb.

Alright now lets look at a PS3 game...
Resistance Fall of Man. IT is a decent game, kind of dissappointing graphics (but none the less good), an overall good title for the PS3. It was supposed to take up.. 22GB of space... hmmmmm.. but wait wait the actual useful data only takes up 4.25gb of data. (this is from an article I read online, The rest is padding to push data to the outer edges of the disc.. It seems to me that we aren't at a point yet where we can fill up a whole DVD.. that's only half the space that a dual layer dvd can hold.

So really from a gamers perspective: get the 360. It is just a better gaming system and will (in my opinion) have better games and here's simply why: it is easier to program for, which in turn costs less to make a game, which in turn lures more developers to program games, which will give you more games, which will inevitably give you better games. You get the PS3 if you want a multimedia powerhouse for those that need all its features.

alright what if you own a psp should it be a extra thing to convince you to get a ps3 since the psps can connect anywhere in the world as long as you and your ps3 has internet and view whatever is on your ps3 such as pictures and movies so if you had a psp what would you get ?

If you can afford a ps3 without having to sacrifice eating for a month then I say get the ps3, better graphics.

But the 360 is a great buy if you ask me, a fraction of the price of the ps3 and yet you still get great graphics, a huge game line up as its already been out for a year and ive heard nothing but good things about xbox live.

The ps3 does not have better graphics than the 360 as of right now and probably wont in the future. Gears of war is by far the best looking console game out there, and multiplatform games generally tend to fair better on the 360 than the pps3 or are about equal. Developers are more familiar with the 360 architecture due to it being out for a longer time... so if you want games now, with great graphics go for the 360.

That being said i would rather get a ps3... but not yet. Yes the 360 has some outstanding games out and a fantastic online service, but future ps3 games excite me more than those on 360. The majority of the good games on the 360 are shooters, and while i love a good action game, i only need so many. I know titles like blue dragon will come out and will be amazing, but overall the 360 is more of a shooter based console.

Im not a fan of companies or systems... i just love games. For me i will by whatever has games that will appeal to me and for me that is the ps3. As of now the games are pretty bad, but future games on the system such as mgs4, lair, GOD OF WAR III, ratchet and clank and final fantasy 13 excite me much more than halo 3 or the inevitable gears of war 2.

In short, get whatever system you think you will play more games on. Neither is superior to the other, as much as fanboys would try to convince you. Look at the games, and pick a system based upon your needs.

So if it were me, i would wait another year or so and get the ps3.. as it really is not worth it right now.

For 2007 ill stick with my wii and ps2. Great games are still being made on ps2, and the wii has a hell of a lineup for the rest of 07.

As mrXniick said, the PS3 doesn't have better graphics, and probably never will. As a *gaming* machine, it is no more powerful than the 360 (and in fact, lacks a few quite important features).

It does come with a Blu-Ray drive, which *might* become handy (if you plan on buying lots of HD movies, and you're willing to assume that Blu-Ray will become the winning format) And if you're interested in computer science, the Cell is a fun (and powerful) beast to play around with. A professor at our university bought a PS3 solely because of that.

But the talk about the PS3 being a better games console is nothing but Sony's marketing propaganda. So far, there hasn't been a single example of the PS3 showing off better graphics than the competition. It also has hardly any exclusive games left which makes the choice even more irrelevant (if you can get the same games for both consoles, why does it matter what you choose?)

I think it'd be interesting if people would list some of the *exclusive* games on either console they're looking forward to. There aren't many of them on either side, but they're obviously important. So if there are any *exclusive* games you think can tip the scales in favor of one console, list them here for all to see. :)

well i dont care about consoles and what wins etc.. as i said.. i am in it for the games i play, not the compnay or the console.

The being said the ps3 exclusives excite me more than those on 360
the main game i am REALLY looking forward to is God of War 3.. there is also mgs4, final fantasy 13, littlebigplanet and lair.

FOr the 360, im not a big halo fan, and gears 2 while it excites me.. isnt ont he same level os god of war 2 or final fantasy for me.

For 2007 though, im excited for the wii lineup:
    Metroid Prime 3 corruption
    super smash brothers brawl
    super mario galaxy
    battalion wars 2
    NiGHTS

You buy an Xbox 360 if you want access to largest library of games among the next-gen consoles (actually current gen, we're just waiting for the PS2 to die). It's either that or you're looking forward to a game that's announced for the Xbox 360.

You buy the PS3 if you want to play some Blu-ray movies or run Linux and test out the Cell, in addition to it's first purpose of being a game console. It's either that or you're looking forward to a game that's announced for the PS3.

You buy a PC if you want to run Windows and do other things an Xbox 360 and PS3 isn't designed to do.

I didn't buy a frigging Xbox 360 to surf the web on it. It's moot point because I already have a PC. I don't know why the hell so many people bother trying to make their game consoles do things they shouldn't do, and when they do things they normally wouldn't do, it's sub-par compared to the things that do those things. My Xbox 360 plays DVDs like crap. The quality sucks. My PC (currently using an HTPC setup) does better. I think my standalone DVD player that isn't output HD resolution even does better! Just recently, I tried that internet browser on the Wii at my friend's house. The resolution was crap and the interface was horrible! Too much integration these days.

    @ mrXniick

Wow... we have similar laptop specs. XD Both Uniwill 259EN... it's just that you get more style points because it's branded Alienware. O_O I'm also wondering why you got a WUXGA screen. Aren't you having a hard time reading text? I'd probably squint a bit at the screen if I was using that resolution. >_<

Also, at the guy who said the Xbox 360 is loud. That's just stupid! How do you define "loud" when I have surround speakers blasting sound with volume set at high. I mean, really, even just using the TV speakers with 20% volume on, you won't notice a thing. My airconditioner is even way louder than my Xbox 360. The fan being "loud" is neglible. Yes, it's relatively loud, but not loud. You want loud eh? Try pissing of a middle-aged woman under stress. You're going to be deaf after hearing her while she's going wild on you.

the 360 is no brainer right now, it's cheaper, has more games, offers the same graphical quality as the ps3(even better), and keep in mind that some really hot games will be realeased for it soon, like halo3, GTA4, mass effect, bioshock, Unreal 3, and forza2, just to name few, so defenitely go for the 360

    @symphonyX

Are specs are very similar.. you are right.. but i dont get my laptop until tuesday... (purchasing it from a friend for $650 =D.. i didnt get alienware for style.... just for that price.) how does your 6600 perform in most games.. just curious.

    And to fadi 229

It is impossible to say it is a no brainer to buy one console or another... maybe for you it is a no brainer, but what if he isnt interested in halo 3, mass effect or forza 2? FOr fans of those GAMES it is a no brainer, but if the games that interest him will be coming out on ps3, then that is a no brainer.

Its unblelievablee to me that people call them gamers when they are so biased to one console, and try to push it on everyone else. I look for the games i want to play, and reccomend consoles that interest individuals rather than promoting console fanboyism.

PS3 because when you get fed up of gaming you can strip out the blue ray drive and stick it in your computer!

Id go with wich ever one has the game library that suits you best.

If there are alot of games out or comming out for one or the other you like more go for that system. In the end thats all that matters. One can be 2x better than the other in performance but if the worse of the two has all the good games...

case of point, I personally would get a Wii if I was to buy a next gen system. Id have more fun with it, and I do all my hardcore gaming on my PC.

PS3 is nice with the bluray player too, I am a HD junky and would like that. 360 requires you to buy the HD DVD player seperate wich makes the price between the two equal.

I recommend the PS3. My 360 crashed within 1 year. My PS3 had no problems whatsoever.

Oh, if hardcore 360 fans think that I damaged it from careless handling, NO, I did not handle it carelessly. I handled it as if it were a rare china vase. It had hardware failure.

I had a 360 for about two weeks...it was starting to die already and I'm sure the RRoD was going to come soon.

    I don't care for the PS3 either...too expensive and I don't care for Sony.

    I vote for the Wii!

It's just too bad you guys have the crappy 360s. I tried running mine for over 2 days without turning it of and it doesn't die. And I'm getting the PS3 when they make a smaller version of it, the only game I want to play on it is Gran Turismo 5. I'll probably get DiRT instead of Forza 2 this June. Gran Turismo 4 on my PS2 still gives me a lot of fun from time to time.

As for the Wii, I don't like it. I just don't like the interface. If it's for Wii Sports, I don't even bother. If I'm going to play tennis, I'll play in on the court with real people, real tennis racquets and a real ball. The Wii is for sissies and if they're saying it's physical, it's a damn lame excuse. Then again, we all have our opinions. I wouldn't buy the Wii even if Nintendo started selling them for $100.

I wonder why these people say the PS3 has better graphics. It's either they're biased or they've never seen a PS3 or Xbox 360 in action. Friggin' liars. If they haven't really seen the two in action and concluded that, it's probably because they haven't really seen it but they're relying on the fact that the PS3 has more raw horsepower on the side of the CPU. Tsk, tsk.

    @ mrXniick

Oh. Anyway, it's still nice. It plays most of the newer games at medium-high settings at 1280x960. Older games like CnC Generals, Sims 2, etc. run flawlessly at max settings. BTW, I don't turn on AA. I get around 6500+ on 3DMark03 and 3000+ on 3DMark05. Haven't tried 3DMark06.

    Games make the system. Period.

I have both. I can make backups on the X360. There are more games on the X360. But that are the only 2 things that are better with the X360.

I like my PS3 much more than mine X360.

It is more silent. More powerful. Has a bluray drive. Can change the harddrive with a standard harddrive. The PS3 is more future proof than the x360, since it has Cell and Bluray.

Today games uses 9 gig. How about one-two years from now? Good games are large. Blue Drageon on X360 are on 4 DVDs. How fun is it to swap DVDs all the time? A single Bluray have 50 gig.
Resistance fall of man is 18 gig.

Also. The X360 is more expensive. X360 + wifi+ HDDVD = More expensive then PS3.

Watching HDDVD on X360 is not fun, beacuse of the fans on it.
Bluray wathing on PS3 is a blast. Works great with the bluetooth remonte.

And. Ps3 is backward compabillity with PS1 and PS2.
There are many great PS2 games that you can buy and play on the PS3.

The X360 emulates a couple of hundreds of Xbox games. PS3, 3-4000 games.

sorry about spelling. I am not american. Not fanboy.

    xbox bad quality !!!
i don't think you know what you're talking about, have you tried both systems to say that?
well, i don't have any of them(ps3 or 360), so i can't tell which is better, as i only play on my pc, but given that i once had an xbox and 2 ps2's, i can honestly say that the xbox blows the ps2 out of the water when it comes to quality, i bought them in 2003, and never had a problem with my xbox, while my ps2 died after just one 1 year, and then i bought another one(the slim one) and last year i started to get those CD errors, everytime i played, so i got fed up and sold it. the problem is that i didn't play too many games on it, actually all i played on it was pro evolution soccer and god of war. do you call this quality?

Shompa, if you really own both an Xbox 360 and PS3, you didn't have to say those things. You should report personal experiences with it, not things we already know! Moron. BTW, your excuse is stupid. "I'm not American". ROLFMAO. So am I. But my English is just as good as most Americans.

My friend has all 3 next-gen systems and I go to his place all the time. PS3 = Xbox 360 when it comes to graphical quality and probably even games (with 360 having the edge in games obviously). And it's really obvious that Shompa is lying. God... Why the hell do we get people like this here? Blu-ray movies are a blast and HD-DVD supposedly sucks because of... W.T.H.?! Fans?! Please... He's probably just another Indian who just has a cheap PS2 and buys pirated games for $1 each. PS1 and PS2 fans usually end up being insecure and naive PS3 fanboys. And you say you're not a fanboy. Wow. You're such a great liar. Go get some common sense and squeeze it into your brain.

It always comes to this, brand wars, what can we do.

I'll leave this thread up for now, as both side have some valid points, but any more baiting and insults/flaming, it'll be closed.
