I am thinking of getting an entertainment machine for my Bravia xbr2. I want to take advantage of its 1080P so would like to get a gaming/movie machine. I have a question about the ps3. Since it has usb ports, can I use a jump drive to transport a movie from my computer to the ps3 and watch it on there? Also the blu ray player, can I play normal DVD movies as well as burnt movies from computer?
-
I moved your thread to off topic and added a poll. I don't know a lot about the PS3, but I do know that Blu ray does play regular DVDs--I would image that it will play burned movies as long as they are in an acceptable format.
-
Wow, I see this thread going well...the PS3 vs XBOX 360 debate will never end. There is no right answer -- people need to pick for themselves.
-
Well....I can't answer those 2 questions. But I just wanted to let you know that if you want it for a lot of movie watching, and not just gaming....the PS3 is easily the way to go. Since you will be watching movies, you can get them on BR, most probably transport them and watch them on the PS3 if you use FAT32 drive (I think). The games will also be on BR disc, which is great.
-
Well by far, everything you want to do the PS3 can do, and yes, it plays blu ray, and DVDs, and can play burned ones that you made.
Also, there's no need for a jump drive, but u can use one on a PS3. There's no need because it can be linked to your XP media center, or Vista PC and share media over lan if you have those OS's.
Something that I really love, and idk how many people actually use it, but I can watch media stored on my PS3 using my PSP from any wifi hotspot since they're linked. -
I'm glad there's such healthy competition between systems this generation. The consumer is the winner! Not since the days of SNES vs Megadrive has someone been able to go into a store, pick either console, and not feel ripped off.
I've got an Xbox 360, and will pick up a PS3 when the price comes down. My Xbox 360 looks 20 times nicer on my Bravia than a PS3 does, it has some of the best video output of any console I've used. The colours and contrast just 'pop'.
However I think a PS3 would be a good choice for what you're wanting to do. Sony looks like they've picked a Winner with Blu-ray, and the PS3's media capabilities are second to none. And of course PS3 has all the same games and quite a few nice exclusives. The fact that it looks like *** on legs doesn't hurt either. -
XBox 360: Cheaper (depending which type you get), more good games today, better online service (costs money), the HD-DVD attachment for it is like 200 more i think.
PS3: more graphical power (apparently, even though it hasn't really been proven), a lot of good games in the future, blue-ray
For you i think the PS3 would be better but in the end it all comes down to your decision we really can't convince to buy one or the other. -
DUDE the 360 has a better GPU, and has tri core processing. Also a beter online comunity, and HDMI. So.... you pick, my vote goes to 360 of coarse. And the 360 has more games, and HD movies.... etc.

So ps3 can play .avi, .mpg, .asf? I will have the ps3 downstairs where my tv is and my wireless router is upstairs. Since the 60/80 gig comes with the wireless adapter already it's nice. Also what's this problem about ps3 having problems with connecting with HDTV's? Will it be ok with my bravia xbr2 42 inch? I'll be getting a hdmi cable (more expensive and cheaper hdmi cable what are the differences? Is it worth it?).
As for price, if there is NOTHING different about ps3 80 and 60 except the 20 extra hdd space, I'll be getting a 60 since the extra $100 and motorstorm is not needed. And as for the price of 60, I think it beats xbox 360 elites price because it already includes a wireless adapter as well as the blu ray player (xbox's hd dvd player). Although not as many people have ps3, it will change once more titles come out so I'm sure it will win next year. -
360 just went down in price. I'd go that route. You could buy the HD-DVD addon or just get an outright HD-DVD player for the same price on eBay, and of course it would be quite a bit better. The total would likely still be less than that of the PS3, which is overpriced.
-
The difference between the 60gig and 80gig isn't just the 20 gigs of drive space. The 80gig is the European PS3 with a bigger drive, which means they took out the PS2 hardware (emotion chip) that American PS3's had until now and will be supporting PS2 games using a software emulator only.
In theory that will result in poorer performance on legacy titles, but I'm skeptical as to whether or not it will have much real impact on performance. That said, I have a 60gig and I'm glad I got that instead of getting one of the 80gigs, it's easier to change hard drives than add a chip. -
And...why would you get an HD DVD player instead of a xbox 360+hd dvd addon....the HD DVD player probably would cost the same or more. By getting the 360, you also get gaming capability, which he wants. -

If you've waited this long, wait a month and get the .65nm Xbox 360. The original Xbox 360 has a 33% failure rate. I'm sorry to say I bought one. ... praying it doesnt' die.. please god
-
I think the current or future software/firmware update disables the Emotion Engine so all PS3s will use software emulation. It'd be weird to have some PS3s use hardware emulation and some using software no?
I think with software, you can also upscale but not with hardware emulation? The latest firmware update can upscale PS1/PS2 games and DVD movies to HD resolutions.
Still sucks, hope they can fix the issues with software emulation, as of right now, its still way better than 360's software backwards compatibility. -
So the internal parts of the 60 gig and 80 gig ps3's are different? What's better and newer?
Also for those of you who have the Bravia xbr2 HDTV with HDMI cable, I have a question. I am in Vancouver so I am a Shaw cable user. I have HDMI cable with the xbr2 and the shaw terminal. When I am in normal channels and then go to HD channels, it blinks and then changes channels (longer than switching from normal to normal channel and HD to HD channel). Is this normal? or is there something wrong? -
Yep, it doesn't matter if you manage to grab the 60GB SKU which still has the Emotion Engine chip. The new firmware upgrade is supposed to disable it anyway.
-
I'm going to assume that the XBox 360 has 1080p output, right? Its now gotten HDMI and a $50 price drop, once they put the 65nm CPU and GPU into it, I will buy one.
-
If you only want a game machine, save some money and buy the X360. If you want a game machine as well as a media box, look no further than the PS3.
-
Add another option to the poll : None, save your money.
-
the PS3 better for multimedia and stuff like that but gaming online and graphics would go to the 360......
-
Online I would have to agree it goes to the xbox 360 but graphics, I think ps3 wins. Ps3 has way more potential and it's already starting to show with new titles coming out.
As for the online gaming, what makes the 360 way better than the ps3? I have only heard this but never knew why. -

Xbox 360
1. Great library of games out now and to come.
2. Xbox Live is perfect. -
playstation 3 hands down for a gaming/ HD movie system
1) blu-ray will most likely win the HD format war
2) it is much more reliable then the xbox 360 which has a high failure rate
3) its cheaper*
xbox 360 premium + HD-DVD player + 5 free HD-DVDS + 1 year live = $570
playstation 3 with blu-ray player + 5 free blu-ray movies + free online = $350
if you take advantage of the $150 off for signing up for a sony visa card at sony style -
well the failure rate on the 360 is pretty much a non-issue now because of microsofts newly introduced 3 year warranty... and if your system is bricked it will likely be placed with the units with the improved processors.
That being said, buy whichever system has the games you want to play. Other people's opinions are irrelevant.
For the people that comment on one system having better graphics than another.. it is pretty much bs. Both systems will look pretty damn similar in most cases, with the 360 taking the slight edge as of now because the earlier release date. -
Also, for online, it's arguable whether XBL is better than PS3's online system. The most immediate reason why it's better is that it's more organized...I mean after paying to pay online...I would expect it to be. On the other hand, online experiences do really come down to the game, especially on the PS3. Resistance has one of the best, organized, ranked multiplayer experiences on any console tbh. Halo 2, no doubt, set precedents in the way people play it online, but the online play comes down to the game, not the service. -
I am on the fence but leaning to PS3 -
The Bad news: Two months out of (Original one-year) warranty.
The Worse news: Just bought a new Sony Bravia for my 360. -
Xbox 360 is better at gaming than PS3....... so I've heard. If you want media-streaming capabilities, build your own Media center PC or get an AppleTV
-
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is PS3 exclusive. Buy a PS3.
-
I am actually highly considering picking up the xbox 360 because of the Halo 3 version that is coming out. It look pretty slick IMO, although I am sure some people think it is ugly. I'll probably hook it right up to my Samsung 226BW and Z-5500's for some nice high def gaming!
Plus I already have 1 wireless 360 controller I use with my PC.

You should defiantely go with the 360 its less expensive, great selection of games, and easy to mod.
-
-
I'd go with the XBox 360 'cause it's a lot better supported ATM.
If only the rumor that MGS4 was going to be released for teh 360 had been true! -

Neither would I... that's why it makes me so sad. The demonstration looked so goddam sexy.

it has been rumored for the 360 so all we can do is hope...although all the PS3 fanboys are laughing in our faces because they'll have a good exclusive game, =/...
I sold my 360 so I could care less now lol...good luck choosing. -
The PS3 lacks a hardware scaler, so it gets into trouble if you don't have a 1080p-capable TV. (It reverts down to 720p)
The 360 is capable of scaling to 1080i.
The BR-drive might come in handy, but so would a HD-DVD drive. It's impossible to say which one will end up the most popular, but of course, if you need a HD-DVD drive, the 360 loses most of its price advantage.
That's not to say you shouldn't get a PS3. For home theater setups, I'd say it's roughly on par with the 360, whereas for plain gaming, the 360 would be a better deal.
Of course, that's just my opinion, and I don't own either console... -
If you want the ultimate HT setup, you'll just have to get both so you can have Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. Just make sure you have a 1080p tv to make it worth it.
-
Im also debating which console to go for. My immediate instinct says ps3 as ive never owned an xbox before but unless theres a significant price drop in the uk sometime before christmas my chances of owning one are slim. The xbox is looking good also but with no built in hd-dvd and all these reports of xbox's braking all the time, Im a little wary. I did read on stuff.tv that its possible Microsoft may be creating an xbox with built in hd drive but as it would be the 'Ultimate' xbox the price of it would pretty much match the ps3 and I would rather have a bluray player than hd-dvd anyway. I will most likely purchase neither for the time being and wait till the ps3 has a price drop, I know the xbox has alot more titles but so will the ps3 in a year or so. I also cant wait to see some games that have been created and optimized for the ps3 instead of pc and 360 ports.
-
-
i like the ps3 based on the games that are scheduled for release...otherwise i probably would of just bought a 360...or even just saved my money and put it back into my bank..
-
I don't have an HD-TV and hardly ever watch movies. I would rather play sports games, but am interested in playing some of the war/shooter type games. Would it be in my best interests to purchase a 360 instead of a ps3?
-
INEEDMONEY Homicidal Teddy Bear
Yeah, PS3 has never been too great with FPS IMO. I rather play them on 360 or computer. But....you could hook up a mouse/keyboard to a PS3, so if you like that setup PS3 may be a good idea.
-
ineedmoney: i like resistance, and im sure i will like haze/killzone among others being released later on. -
i still dont understand why people are hyped for killzone considering the first game was mediocre at best...
It just doesnt make sense to me. -
also, the second KZ looks awesome so far... -
well pretty much every media outlet as well as my other friends thought the game was mediocre.
Its amazing how hyped people can be for the sequel to a average game.
Should I get a ps3 or xbox 360?
