As we all know, the 84/8600 series were lemons ... to make a long story short, I fell victim to the "6 months out of warranty" GPU crash scenario.

My laptop reseller wants to charge me $375 + shipping for a brand new NV 8600m gs, which includes a 6 month warranty. If you were to put yourself in my shoes, would you ...

    a) Buy a new notebook.
    b) Pay the $400+.

In case it matters, here is the specs of the laptop:

    Sager NP2090
    - Display: 15.4" WXGA "Glare Type"
    - Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo T7700 2.4GHz
    - Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 512mb 8600m gs
    - Ram: 4,096MB DDR2 667 PC2 5300
    - Primary Hard Drive: 160GB 7200RPM

New notebook plain and simple. You can get an 8600m GS equivalent notebook for $500-$600. A 105m should even be of similar performance.

Clearly you shouldn't get another 8600.

Replace it with a different card or buy a new notebook if you prefer.

save up and get a new notebook. paying nearly 400 for an obsolete gpu is not worth it at all.

a 8600m gs is better than a 105m though. i get about 3.6k in 3dmark06 at 1280*1024. overclocked but my cpu is slow.

Definitely go for a new notebook. If you part out the old laptop you could make back some money and possibly cover the cost of a new notebook.

You can find a replacement card for anywhere between $130-$250 (with shipping). You didn't specify if your graphic card is MXM-II compliant. If it is, I can point you to where you can get a replacement card for a reasonable price.

Also, someone already mentioned "the oven" revival method. I can tell you that it works. I'm writing this from a laptop with oven-revived 8600M-GT MXM-II.

If your card is MXM-II, it's really easy to do it, not to mention you dont have anything to lose. You just heat it up in the oven for a few minutes, and it will work again. For more detailed instructions, first you need to determine if your card is MXM, then just ask and I will let you in on the details.

i doubt the card is MXM but its not worth it... you can easily get a new laptop with a better card for $500+++... not worth spending so much to repair something so old... just dissassemble you laptop and sell off the screen , cpu ram etc to make some cash and buy a new laptop..

it's a compal jhl90 i think. should be able to house a 9600m gt or something.
i do agree that buying a new laptop is the better choice.

You can get a replacement 8600M-GT MXM-II for as low as $130 with shipping. I think that would be worth it.

You could always just get a 9600M GT or even a 3650. Although with a 3650 you wouldn't see as much of an improvement, it is cheaper.

The 9600M GT models are from the new compal versions of the same notebook, don't think it would work.

I'm actually surprised it has the 8600M GS, I had only seen it available with the 8600M GT.

Yeah, I bought this thing a year 1/2 ago. I've decided to buy a new notebook and sell off the parts to the NP 2090. Although baking it does sound interesting ... I'd rather just cut my losses and try and salvage the parts that work. Thank you guys!

Edit - So I just found and read the thread on baking the MB. I'm going to give it a shot once I get my notebook back. I'll post the results. Thanks guys!
