Do people still play battlefield 2 and should I get it? Should I get battlefield 2142 instead of battlefield 2?
Also, is it easy to find good servers with lots of players?

Yes... I still play Battlefield 2. I played it on an old notebook, but now re-installed it again on an XPS notebook I purchased 3 months ago. Yes, there are still definitely many people who play BF2, but of course prob not as much as those who play CS or WOW. I personally prefer BF2 over BF2142, as I prefer modern warfare over futuristic warfare.

You can still find good servers w/ lots of players, but just download the 1.41 Patch for more ranked servers that don't require too high levels of ping.

If you're looking for a more futuristic-style warfare experience, BF2142 is great, but for modern warfare, BF2 still owns.

I just got BF2 myself a short while ago and I still have mixed feelings about it. The single player kinda threw me off...I felt like I was playing online. It's one of the few non-linear games out there. Haven't tried the multiplayer yet.

Yeah I kinda got that feeling. It just threw me off cuz I'm coming off a year long COD4 spree and BF2 is pretty different.

I'm going to reinstall mine again when I get home. Same with 2142, I just have to get it back from a friend. BF2 is great. Thats it. I have had more fun on that game than many games can wish they could. It's WAY different from COD so don't go in expecting that play style. Much more teamwork is involved and sometimes there is a lot of walking. People still play it enough to make you happy but you will run into the same people on different days. And when you jump in it, if you might suck off the bat, don't feel bad and stop playing because it's basically the fact that most people playing are really good. It gets really fun once you learn the controls.

God I hope they are making a BF3 and I hope it's not a port of Bad Company.(I hope it uses the same engine though)

GET IT GET IT GET IT! I have played BF2 since day 1 and have close to 500 hours in it, as sad as that sounds. But great game.

There's little news on BF3, but from what I've gathered it'll be modern day again, with fully destructible environments. But since it is probably still in design phase, it could be anything, or never released (hope not).

Well I hope DICE has not lost it's way with making arcady console games and Heroes. I like Bad Company, I have it on 360, but it has some serious flaws compared to BF2. One of the reasons why I think they did not translate Bad Company to the PC was because of the 90% destructible enviroments. I'm not sure if a lot of the BF2 player's systems could take the power to do that. I'm not sure though. I was just very disappointed when they only made BF:BC for consoles and then revealed to PC gamers Heroes.

bf2 is a good game; however, if you're looking into getting a new fps then perhaps look into left 4 dead as it is an awesome multiplayer game that forces you to work together.

bf2 incorperates teamwork, however, many people just go off by themselves and snipe. the only problem i have with bf2 is people are more interested in bringing up their stats rather than playing the game to win. you'll often find medics trying to revive you while they're being shot at so they can increase their score, rather then trying to defend you while you're down and then heal you (a medic isn't good if he's dead). it's very common for you to be shot in the middle of a skirmish, and then a medic run out of nowhere and attempt to heal you without thinking about clearing the area first.

the game is amazing when you get two teams that work much more strategically, but usually that isn't the case and it's just another deathmatch game rather than CTF. i'm not saying the only way to play it is to treat it like some military mission. but with the game's design, the sole purpose to to organize yourself into small squads and carry out tiny operations in efforts to capture all the flag points. it's much funner when you're challenged by a strategical team, though being challenged doesn't mean avoiding the constant grenade spamming and the random C4's.

the game is probably cheap so snatch a copy of it. many people still play and there are plenty of servers still available. however, newer and perhaps more innovative games are coming out and you might want to check the reviews and footage of such games as well.

Like any online game, you have to find the right server and the right people to play with. You do that and you will have an enjoyable experience.

There are many servers that I play regularly, and you begin to recognize names, and when you're on opposing teams, you hate them, but as soon as they're on your team and squad, then you respect them greatly.

Nice thing is that the game IS different every time you play despite there only being a handful of maps. But most maps a huge, and that makes it that much more fun.

    Great fun.

Get it, i have it since day one aswell, and I dont regret it. Probably because I like jets, and other games can't offer me as much fun as bf2 does using jets. P.S.There is a mod called project reality, which makes game more realistic if you like.

I'm still trying to figure out how to run this game in a resolution that's higher than 1280x960. I tried all the commands in the target line but it either doesn't change or the game doesn't even start at all.

single player mrpresident? battlefield was never intended to be single player. its really there just as a courtesy in case you get cut off the internet for some reason and have no real single player games... or practicing with vehicles/guns if you dont want to do it in real time. the only times ive ever gone on single player were to test out some things with the gunship, or maybe change sensitivity (although i think i did that in game, real time anyways...)

in my experience 90% of the people who played bf2 and then 2142 liked 2 better, and about half liked it better when they played 2142 first. i personally dont like how the guns shoot in bf2 and i dont really like the ironsights so i was a 2142 guy for a long time. tf2 is my game now though

as for "most people playing are really good" i would not agree with that... its just whenever you start at a game, unless you are unnaturally talented you will start at the bottom. the really good people dont play in pubs anyway :p

//edit: 500 hours is nothing if youve had the game since day one... i played 2142 for one year and had something like 800 hours. granted that was higher than average playing time, and i didnt play any other games, but i still think 500 hours in however many years bf2 has been out isnt that much :p

Yeah I just have a tendency to complete the single player part of the game before I go on to multiplayer. Guess that's not good for BF2.

Wait do you have to have Gamespy in order to play online? I already have an account with EA but every time I click on multiplayer it asks me to create a new account and my account doesn't work when I type it in because it says that an account under this email address already exists. There is no other option to just log in.

After switching to COD4 from BF2, I realized how utterly small the COD4 maps were. It was like being enclosed in a box! 50-60 player servers on COD4 is utter chaos, but 50-60 player servers on BF2, with such large, well though out maps, is a very enjoyable experience, especially when you have small groups moving together and capturing checkpoints. BF2 is my favorite only multiplayer, and has yet to be beaten (team fortress 2 is good too).

I just bought the game for a second time a couple of weeks ago (gave my last copy to a friend as I was bored with it).

Only reason I'm back on is the Forgotten Hope 2 Mod

Just tried this online for the first time last night. I really didn't enjoy it...my first problem was that it wouldn't let me create an online account because my email address was supposedly being used already. Then when I started playing, there was just way too much going on, not to mention the extremely annoying messages your teammates love to use every second. I'm gonna stick to COD4.

I do, and the game is much more enjoyable that way. However, I believe that a game that offers the ability to play with 64 people on such a large map has the opportunity to be much more entertaining than one that is confined to a smaller space. The large maps also allow for the introduction of vehicles, and not just a tank or a humvee, but jets, helicopters, anti-air vehicles, etc.

CoD 4 is nothing but a spawn-killfest. I am quite effective in BF2, but don't last more than 30 seconds in CoD 4. That's not fun. That's annoying.

ahh I remember I had every mod available for BF1942, its a shame there wasn't that much mod development for BF2... :(

Depends how (and what game mode) you play, I suppose. Since it's fairly easy to get a 1:1 K/D ratio by rushing out shooting like crazy, many people do that to rack up their points since there is no penalty for deaths. However, if you're more interested in getting a better K/D ratio (like me), then you can definitely last longer than 30 seconds by being patient.

But, on the whole, you're right in that you're more likely to die faster in COD4 than in BF2 due to the size of the maps.

    COD4&5 are way too easy!

I liked to be challenged and enjoy stalking someone from 100 yards away and waiting for that good shot like in BF. COD honestly does not take much skill. It's mainly for very impatient people, BF requires you to have some patience.

Saying that, I play COD a lot LOL.

I purchased BF2 at Best Buy about a year ago when it was on sale for $5. Try checking the local ads to see if they have it on sale.

Also, Amazon has it right now for $7.99 + shipping, but if you order more than $25 worth of stuff, you can get free shipping ;)

This thread is pretty much a COD4 vs. BF2 thread now... Haha.

Anyways, I haven't tried COD4 yet, but all I can say is that BF2 is not just all about a kill and spawn fest. There's some tactic involved as well, especially if you take on positions like Commander where you have to know where to deploy and order your troops. Don't know if it works the same way with COD4.

Also, BF2 is definitely not a game you play single player. I don't even think there is anything to "complete" in single player. Single player is pretty much a training ground w/ bots for the real multiplyer experience. Not playing online is pretty dumb because it takes out the whole "ranking" experience and weapon upgrades.

So if you do get BF2, play it online...

I enjoyed BF2142 more than BF2. With the exception of Strike on Karkand, I wasn't that impressed with the level design in BF2.
