i recently bought a DELL XPS M1730 to keep up with my cousins overclocked tower and its lived up to its standards by running 99% of games on a higher spec with few problems however i was lookng around the net last night at some of the overclocked PCs and some say you can squeeze an extra 700MHz out of my processor and graphics cards, so i was wondering would it be a good idea to ever overclock my PC? and if so how would i go about it?

Overclocking is a good way to get some extra power out of your card, but not without its risks. You'll get higher temps and from them, decrease the life of your card. You'll need to monitor your temps while you're overclocking to make sure your card doesn't get dangerously hot (90 C).

    See this guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=219954

Also, to monitor temps, either use RivaTuner (mentioned in guide), or HWMonitor.

would a cooler unit under the laptop be of any use to squeeze just that little bit extra out?

Yes, a laptop cooler will lower your temperatures and allow you to overclock higher and more safely.

Unless you have an X9000 CPU, you can`t OC it.
As for the GPUs, safe levels are 600/1500/900 , provided that the max temp does not pass 85C.
Also, raise the back of the laptop for proper airflow...

I OC my computer from stock: Core: 500 Mem:800 Shader:1250
    Core: 625 Mem:925 Shader:1550

And it stays at about 65C under super crysis load.
So just keep increasing them till you get a good balance.

It all depends on your card.

there are no universal 'safe' overclock numbers. every gpu/cpu is made different.

just clock it a high as you can while keeping temp below 90(preferably below 85), and make sure it's not artifacting.
