So i'm almost finished fallout 3, and i love it and will probably play it again after it ends, but i was wondering, i love games and play most of them that come out but sadly i missed oblivion so if after playing fallout 3 will it be hard to go and play oblivion after?
Is there anyone here who played both and preferred oblivion instead? If so why? Thanks![]()

Yes, in fact they are equally marvelous. Fallout 3 is like a futuristic version of oblivion with guns. Its almost a sure bet that if you enjoyed fallout 3 for what it offered, you will like Oblivion.
-
I liked both, but the theme of Oblivion is so vastly different from Fallout 3, that I think if you like mythical themed games, and liked FO3, you'll like it. Imo, it's a better game than FO3 but that's mostly because the post apocalyptic setting and color is kind of depressing.
-
I loved fallout 3 but didn't like Oblivion. All of the characters in Oblivion had the same voice and the level scaling defeated any reason you would have to go into the caves and oblivion gates. If you were weak you'd battle all the way through some cave only to find the weakest sword in the game.
I was certain I would hate fallout 3 because it would be oblivion with guns... but surprisingly it fixed everything that was wrong with oblivion and became fun. -

oblivion is a fairly bleak game in my opinion. the plot isnt very good and the nature looks fairly normal. very realistic, of course, and the fighting and spells systm is great, but there are just few interesting monsters and items, and the leveled system is HORRIBLE. you will get to a point in which everything is difficult enough still, sure, but glass and daedric weapons and armor is everywhere and all you ever fight are daedroth and bandits with armor as ridiculously heavy, expensive, and good as yours. there are about 4 different kinds of cave/ruin type things you can go into and all the bandits are the same. a few of the quests have different monsters and buildings but not many. the towns and the quests are somewhat interesting and different but only in a very certain specific way.
overall, i dont like the fact the the entire world is very realistic and medieval and everything, it just seems very stereotypical. morrowind is much better.
so thats my general review. it is really pretty fun, just not very interesting for that long, and not that great to actually follow and get into. however, all that changes with the expansion pack, which i have not played through fully. i forget what its called, the one with dementia, the worlds of insanity etc. that is all very much more interesting and awesome.
i should say though that i am someone who is pretty dissatisfied with all aspects of life that are good but not different, and i am very opposed to drugs like cocaine and ecstasy rather than hallucinogens. -
I put 250 hours into the main game with Fran's mod, and I haven't done Shivering Isles yet.
You don't have to go crazy with mod's either, that can get confusing. Just get one of those two, install and go. -
I spent a billion hours on oblivion. Such a fun game, half of it wasn't even spent on quests. I was just kind of wandering around exploring.
-
I <3 fallout 3, playing it does make me want to revisit oblivion, I never beat it, I might give it a second spin after fallout
-
I think Oblivion is way better than Fallout 3. It's all a matter of personal taste really - it mostly comes down to whether you like the old mythical setting or the futuristic apocalyptic setting.
-
I loved Oblivion, but Fallout3 offers better, smoother gameplay, better storytelling and lots of great humor
It's f*kin awesome.
But Oblivion is nice as well - so go play it (be sure to install a couple of mods though). -
Fallout 3 does seem depressing but the humor balances out the dark themes.
Try Fallout 2, RD. Isometric View FTW. -
The only thing i find that fallout 3 is better than oblivion is that it is more immersive. The dialog is obviously a lot better, and one time i came across a massive battle against the merchant with his wagon and super mutants and i was like wow... And of course there are half-scripted battles as well. The closest thing you can get that immersive in oblivion is where traveling npc's stumble upon boars in the wild and it kills them before you do..
Other than that, i think oblivion is better as there are more weapons, monsters, quests, loot, and places to explore. -
As others said, it depends of what do you like more. If you are into fantasy and mythical world, Oblivion will suit you better. Otherwise, futuristic and post-apocalyptic surroundings of F3 will give you nicer experience.
Personally, I prefer Oblivion due to a large number of mods and foremost, colorful and beautifully represented world in it. -

Oblivion is much better than fallout. It's such a deep game and the mods are fantastic
-
I tried the OOO mod for oblivion; terrible. When i started off it took about 10 minutes to kill even a single bandit. Then i reached level 50 in destruction magic(character lvl 2 or 3) where i could cast some slightly more powerfull spells and i could kill 95% of enemies with one fireball making the game rediculously easy. I really can't understand how it happened but it made the game 10 times worse than vanilla.
If you can stick the outdated graphics of morrowind then get that, no question one of my top 10 favorite games ever. -
What's not so good about Oblivion is that it can be so better than what it is. It's almost necessary to have mods up to improve gameplay and rid it of bugs. I recommend researching on mods to install first before playing it. But yeah, Oblivion is pretty epic!

Mods eh? All my games on PC currently were bought on Steam and i dont think oblivion will ever come out for Steam then again i may be wrong
Also im thinking about getting KOTOR as well how do you think KOTOR would compare to oblivion i know its an old game but i hear its still really fun i had it for the original xbox but i never played it lol i thought the graphics for Xbox sucked the PC version look considerably better though. -
Of course KotOR graphics will look a little dated now, but you will thoroughly enjoy the storyline.
As for Oblivion, I recommend you have a look at the oblivion mod subsection on Bethesda's forums as a start. The downside to the game is that modifications are almost a necessity for it to really shine. So you'll need to spend a little time reading into these, as the number and variation in player made mods is huge. Try not to let it eat away your life though.

And imo oblivion > kotor.
Although kotor does rock -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
yeah lol curunen i already heard stories about people who lost 3 months of there life playing oblivion i feel thats what's happening with me now on Fallout 3
Ratchet they dont have patches to fix the problems with KOTOR? -
really, because the mod community for oblivion is so huge, any problem that ever appeared in oblivion can be fixed easily. If you get FCOM, plus all of the components of that mod then oblivion will be almost a totally new game.
-
Oblivion is like Fallout 3 with swords and magic. Fallout 3 is like Oblivion with guns and explosives.
I still prefer Oblivion though (perhaps I'm getting tired of the typical post-apocalyptic and dystopian FPS theme?). Anyone should try either game if they haven't tried one yet. Fallout 3 is quite optimized and runs fine on older laptops like mine. -

The patches are a bit hit and miss to if they work or not.

Hey Red, you know there will be about 3-4 DLC for Fallout 3 soon? One will expand the level cap and let you play after the ending
-
You should like it, they're almost the same apart from the theme.
And all you whining about the leveling system in Oblivion... get a freaking mod
You all say how you like to tweak games and get the most out of them, then heres your opportunity. -
Something that Xbox360 and PS3 owner miss on Oblivion:
http://ntblowz.googlepages.com/15150-4-1202397525.jpg
And there are some big quest/land mod done by community which are quite nice (like SoVvM that add whole Morrowind on Oblivion)
On my computer the Oblivion folder is 19Gig atm with some of mod adds in, I am sure I am still on the lighter side of the scale -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Ntsan.....19gb?! Wow and that mod looks gorgeous. -
I have Oblivion for the 360 and the biggest thing that would anger me is playing for 2 hours and then losing it all after you got killed because you forgot to save. Is there a mod for Oblivion that adds auto saves like in Fallout 3?(which I am currently playing on the PC) I'm thinking about picking up Oblivion again for the PC this time.
Where can you find Oblivion cheap?
Also is there any mod that adds a VATS type combat system to Oblivion LOL...I abuse VATS in Fallout 3
Lincoln's Repeater + V.A.T.S. = Very Nice!(borat) -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Are you serious? Theres no auto-save? Wow that sucks autosave helped me out alot sometimes in fallout 3
-
Many times in Oblivion I would complete a quest, die, then look at my screen and see my character back a day and I would simply get up and turn off the 360...take a deep breath and scream at the game.
Great game...it seriously is but god does it need a autosave or at least after you complete a quest.
But a downside to Fallout 3's autosave is if you did something wrong....it's hard to go back since almost every door saves for you. -
I don't know if you messed with the settings, but Oblivion has the same autosave system as Fallout.
-
please tell me that was a joke and why did they not make that default. -
I've gone back to oblivion now that I've done the majority of quests in fallout, although I haven't finished the main quest. Previously I had only played Oblivion on the 360, but never got the expansion pack, and I was missing the mods, so $20 was a good deal (best buy).
Overall, I like Oblivion more. Mainly because of the setting, you know, mythical monsters, swords, magic, etc. The forest is gorgeous and naturally more appealing than a desolate wasteland. The dungeons are more interesting than rundown office buildings. VATS will make you smile, but I enjoy oblivion's combat more. The arena matches are a good fight
I haven't even delved into the mods yet (besides performance related), but I feel I've got a while to spend with oblivion, even though I've already played it before. I've spent about 70 hours on my fallout character, but since I've already done all the side quests and I'm towards the end of the MQ, I don't feel there's nearly as much replay value as oblivion. -
Am I the only one that liked the desolate wastelands?
-
I love gritty themed games where they are depressing(I'm not emo)
I usually hate happy fairy pixy dust magic fanasty games but I love oblivion for some reason as well. It's more to do with the game play than the setting.
Like for instance...I hate WOWs setting. If it was more like WOD(World of Diablo) I would not be typing because I would have an addiction to it. The art in Wow is way too "happy" thats the best word I can use to describe my hate for that game. -
Having played Oblivion first, then Fallout 3 I felt like I was playing Oblivion in the future, considering both were made by Bethesda. The minor annoyances were that they use the same voice actors over and over again in both games and character animations. You'd think Bethesda would've spent a little more time making sure people run and jump correctly.
You should play it, but I would consider installing mods as others have suggested. Specifically ones that improve the user interface, combat, and perhaps level scaling. -
Oblivion have autosave when you into/out of buildings/caves/whatever, or you can make it save per 15min using streamline
Of course manual save is the best! But take a while to remember saving at critical moment -
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
Wow they really used the same voices? Thats cheap man NO ONE in the fallout had a more annoying voice then moira brown........

Let me clarify. Different voice actors were used for their respective games with a few exceptions. You'll notice that random people in Oblivion will share the same voice just like in Fallout. I don't think the voice actress playing Moira is in Oblivion but you may recognize some of the other voices. Like I said, it's only a minor complaint but it kind of detracts from the characters and atmosphere.
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
no i knew what you meant that is cheap though as bethesda more then has the budget to get good voice acting
-
Some games use the developers faces on character models. -
Look at the majority of mods that have been put out with voice acting. They do a good job (much better than I could do), but if it wasn't a free mod and people were paying $40-$50 for it, there would be a lot of complaints. -
What's funny in oblivion is when your talking to someone, depending on what topic you pick they'll talk in completely different voices. Like talking to a homeless person they'll ask for money in a weak frail voice, then when you ask them about any other random topic that could appear they'll speak in the same strong booming voice the guards have
They must have been running low on budget when it came to hiring voice actors. -
Hiring Sean Bean, Patrick Stewart, Lynda Carter, and Liam Neeson probably wasn't cheap. Or maybe they agreed to a lower salary, I don't know.
-
I played Oblivion for a while, I think I finished like half the game, but I got bitten and became a vampire. Then I stopped playing for a couple months and when I came back to it I had no idea what to do and got bored with it. Would I still live Fallout 3? Is it just as expansive?
