Is it best to always use AC power to play games when using a GPU which is overclocked, or will using battery power suffice?
-
Depends if ur battery's going down....just do hit and trial, u know some sort of test routine....alt+tab out and check the battery..!!
-
If OC'ed, you should use up your battery faster. I don't see how it would be necessary to be plugged in, but you will get less life per charge.
-
Why would you run the system OCed on battery? you`d lose minutes fast...
-
I don't think there's better or not better. Use it as you like, when at home plug it in, when away use battery if you have to. On battery power, the CPU speed is reduced if your power scheme is set like that so CPU frequency is reduced to about 50% so you could be experiencing slower gaming, less FPS. Atleast that was the case with my Intel T7200. Correct me if I'm wrong someone.
-
You`re not wrong, but there are ways to make the system run at full power, like in Vista for example.
That+OCing will kill you battery life fast. -
you should have AC on for gaming, no matter OCed or not.
-
You don't have to have it plugged in but if your battery will die very fast.
-
My dell can't keep up normal speeds on battery - even when I set everything to high performance with notebook hardware control.
-
You can try RMClock to max out the CPU speed.

Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
Gaming under battery is usually a short lived experience, OC'd or stock with modern games.

I want to see you post about something that I have all-knowledge about and call your thread a POS, -
no matter what any one else says, i wouldn't do it, not just because it will take more battery power, but becuase it will draw more power, more then the battery might have been designed to do. Also the fans might not kick in as early, leading to overheating.
-
Theres something else that hasnt been mentioned by previous posts. Even if you set your battery usage to "high performance" it is most likely that your system will not perform as well as when plugged into the wall.
I once read about this (you should be able to find it just by googling), and did a 3DMark06 test when not using my AC adapter. Usually I get around 5500-5800 in 3DMark06 on my current system. When I wasnt plugged in I got only around 2200. -
You also have to disable nvidia powermizer to do this kind of check.

Thanks for your input Blemish and vshade
-
Have you considered getting a second battery then?

The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
I would suggest to play plugged.
Should one use their laptop charger whenever gaming with a OC'ed GPU?
