Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone else played the SimCity beta either last night or a couple of weeks ago. If so, what kind of framerate were you hitting? I played with the 680m last night, but I could only get 30fps at max settings 1080p. This confuses me because 1.) the game should not be demanding enough to trouble a 680m and 2.) I was only getting 70% GPU usage. I'm somewhat of a fps freak, so not knowing why I wasn't hitting 60fps or even 45fps worries me. Maybe there will be a Nvidia driver closer to release?

I haven't played the beta so I can't comment on how the 680m performs, but my guess is it's just not optimized for Nvidia cards at the moment. There will probably be a new driver that fixes underutilization around the time that Simcity releases, so I wouldn't worry too much about it at this point :)

I don't really understand why anyone would subject themselves to SimCity's annoyances, what is so great about this game that it's worth putting up with this online only, Diablo 3 BS? Single player game that is forced to use a server because game calculations will be server side? That is obnoxious. So what is so great, that it's worth putting up with this over City XL or any other city sim?

no offense but why do you care?

Anyway, I remember the Sims used to have an extremely high ram usage but since I don't have sim city 5, I really can't say. Anyhow, I doubt it's the GPU that is bottlenecking the game, maybe it's the CPU?

Because I want to know, and since the OP has already bought the game to get his beta access, I'd like to know. Why do you care what I want to know?

because some people just don't care about it being online only?
Is it really hard to understand?
I got 4 friends also got the beta access and they didn't know about the online only but when I told them, they simply don't give a f

I care because I find it funny that you are expecting the OP to answer you when you didn't even provide any slight help at all but to go all rage on 'ONLINE ONLY' and going back onto his decision on why he got the game....

Well I know their not the same game but the sims 3 has issues with the gtx680m on my laptop. I only used to get 30fps on everything maxed as well. The AntiAliasing is a framerate killer, might be under ' edge smoothing' ea like to call it.

OK, I'll try to give you an honest answer here...

Each of us (likely) has one franchise or game that we're willing to forgive an awful lot on because it's our favorite. For some, this favorite remains constant over rediculously long time perdiods (mine is Civilization, particularly Civ IV, and I've had this as my favorite game/franchise since it came out in 1991, making it more than 20 years now!) while others change their current 'favorite' more frequently.

At any rate, if it's your favorite, you're more willing to put up or completely overlook perceived shortcomings. SimCity for me used to be an occasional favorite for me, and honestly if the game delivers on an ability to make a fun city sim that develops and expands on what I remember, I might give it another shot (I say 'might' only because I haven't personally played the franchise since SimCity 2000 or so, so I don't know much about the state of the game currently, but I remember I used to really enjoy it!)

I think your mentioning of Diablo III was apt here. For me, personally, the game didn't have enough draw for me to overcome all the negatives I'd heard, so I never got it. I do understand, though, that even though it was completely uninteresting to me for the perceived flaws, millions out there had a lot of fun playing it - they were fans of the series, and willing to overlook flaws I couldn't handle.

So, I'm guessing it's like that. If the OP is excited enough to play the beta, he (sorry, FuzzyNorman, guessing 'he' based on the membername, my apologies if incorrect) is probably a fan of the series, or at least this iteration of it.

This was a long winded explanation. Here's the short version: We're all different, and other folks may like things you don't. :p

Here's a bonus piece of info: the reason I think folks were a little snarky to you is that you kinda came off like you were raining on the OP's parade for no reason. I'm going to assume here that this isn't the case - that you really DID want to know if there was something about this game that made it worthwhile despite the perceived issues. Sadly, for you, the answer may be no - if you're not a fan, you're not a fan, and that's just the way it is (kinda like me and Diablo III). But for the OP (and maybe me, too, we'll have to see!) there may be enough of interest to give it a shot!

This has been a Peace and Harmony public service announcement. Now, everone please hug, sing a verse of a campfire song of your choosing, then return to your happy place. :)

I never played a Diablo game before III, but still found it amazing enough to be forgiven for all the trash it was getting. I was beyond addicted to it... farming the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over.. Game was good.

The OP likes SimCity. This thread is not about your opinion of SimCity, it's about the game's performance.

I've been playing the beta for a while now, and it's pretty brutal on the CPU. Needs some work on multi-threading support.

I didn't play in the beta but from the footage I have watched, there is a "Maximum FPS" setting in the video options that looks to be set to a default of 30 FPS. The additional options weren't demonstrated, but I am assuming there are higher limits and/or an off setting.

This. With the limiter turned off and everything maxxed I get around 45fps with my 7970m. The game is fun when you're not running into bugs. Hopefully they fix it soon.

Around 30 fps on my 680m with med settings. Worse as your city gets busier. Even tried a slight OC and still poor results.

This bug is still present in release version and causes the game to be unplayable on anything over minimum settings on my 650M. I have been trying to get their attention to solve the issue.

Its a bug? Im getting quite pathetic performance. Not terrible but below what id expect. Perhaps its more CPU dependent.

Nope, using only 50% of my dual core CPU (per core) and causing it to run at only 1.2GHz (when it has base clock of 2.5GHz and can Turbo to 3.1GHz) is not what I'd call demanding at all! Or, more to the point, not what I'd call optimised at all :(

Disable HyperThreading in your BIOS and see if your first core ramps up to full speed.

I'd try Rhombus' suggestion as well -- give Throttlestop a shot.

Hi, not sure if anyone is still reading this. But I had the same problem, and it turned out that my 680M in the Sager wasn't active for a lot of different games. I ended up going into 3d settings under the NVIDIA control panel--and under global settings, selected "always use 680M" or something equivalent. Alternately, you can specify which programs should use the 3d hardware, but for me, that was a bit of a pain. Good luck!
